When Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts square off Feb. 12 in Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., it will mark the fourth time where quarterbacks from the same state start in the NFL's biggest game.
The last time it happened was Super Bowl LIII when California signal callers Tom Brady and Jared Goff were under center for the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams, respectively.
Pennsylvania produced the quarterbacks in the other two games. Joe Montana led San Francisco to a 38-16 win over Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX. Six years later, Jeff Hostetler led the New York Giants to a 20-19 win over Jim Kelly and the Buffalo Bills at Super Bowl XXV.
Mahomes graduated from
Whitehouse (Texas) in 2014 while Hurts graduated from
Channelview (Texas) in 2016. This will be the sixth and seventh time a quarterback from the Lone Star State will be starting in the Super Bowl. Mahomes is the only Texan with multiple starts with next Sunday being his third.
Drew Brees was the first quarterback from Texas to start a Super Bowl. The former
Westlake (Austin, Texas) standout led New Orleans to a 31-17 win over Indianapolis in Super Bowl XLIV. Nick Foles and Matthew Stafford are the other two.
California has the most appearances among quarterbacks to start in the Super Bowl with 28. Tom Brady (10) and John Elway (5) account for over half of those. Some other notable names include Jim Plunkett, Aaron Rodgers and Colin Kaepernick.
Pennsylvania has the second-most with 15. Montana and Kelly both started four Super Bowls. Other notables include Marino, Joe Namath, Johnny Unitas, Rich Gannon and Matt Ryan.
Louisiana checks in with the third-most at 14. Terry Bradshaw and Peyton Manning both started four Super Bowls while Eli Manning made two starts. David Woodley, Doug Williams, Stan Humphries and Jake Delhomme round out the list for the Bayou State.
Ohio was the only other state to hit double-digits with 10. Roger Staubach started four Super Bowls while Ben Roethlisberger made three starts. Len Dawson started Super Bowls I and IV. Joe Burrow snapped a 10-year drought for Ohio and started last year's Super Bowl.
In total, 22 different states have had at least one quarterback start the Super Bowl.
