Will Grier's 837-yard effort in Davidson Day's 104-80 win over Harrells Christian Academy broke the national record for single game passing yardage, but Grier's effort is just one of many impressive passing performances this season that has resulted in a complete makeover of the record books.
Prior to the 2012 season, only 10 quarterbacks were on record, according to the National Federation of High Schools Record Book, for having thrown for more than 600 yards in a single game. Four other quarterbacks, not included in the NFHS Record Book but recorded in the Ohio State Association Record Book, also threw for more than 600 yards.
That's only 14 600-yard performances in more than 100 years of high school football.
In 2012, nine quarterbacks have performed the feat. Besides Grier's effort, which now tops the all-time list, 2012 has provided the Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 all-time performances.
The incredible yardage totals aren't going to stop any time soon. Grier is only a junior while sophomores Jake Browning of Folsom and Jarredd Jarrell of Prestonburg and junior Grant Sherman of Kenton will be back next year to continue their assault on the record books.
Here's a look at the reported passing yardage marks better than 600 yards. Those in bold occurred in 2012. Those in italics have not been reported to the NFHS. All other marks listed are from the NFHS record book.
