The city of San Diego has a long and great baseball history. Dating back to the 1920s, when it had arguably the best high school team in the nation, to the 21st century when it had multiple players taken No. 1 overall in the Major League Baseball draft, "America's Finest City" has been a baseball hotbed.
So it shouldn't come as any surprise that San Diego sits atop our list of the top 25 high school baseball cities in America.
Using the 2022 MaxPreps computer ratings, we compiled the top 10 teams from each major city and used the sum of the ratings for those 10 schools to determine the top 25 teams. Teams could only be from the city itself — teams from suburbs were not factored in.
San Diego did not have any one great team on its list, but rather a multitude of very good teams. In fact, six teams from the city had a computer rating of 20 or better (a computer rating of 20-plus would place a team among the top 500 teams in the country). No other city had more than four.
The home of Hall of Famer Ted Williams (he attended Hoover in the 1930s), San Diego had the top team in the nation in the 1920s when the Cavemen from San Diego High won a national championship game against a team from Cleveland in 1921.
In the 2000s, Matt Bush (Mission Bay), Stephen Strasburg (Westview) and Brady Aiken (Cathedral Catholic) all went No. 1 overall in the MLB Draft. Two other San Diego area players, Mickey Moniak (La Costa Canyon) and Adrian Gonzalez (Eastlake) also went No. 1 overall.
Miami comes in a close second with four teams sporting a ranking of 20 or better. Miami is one of five Florida cities to make the list — the most cities of any state.
The most curious city might be Bradenton, Fla. The city has a population of just 57,000 people, but it is also the home to IMG Academy, which fielded eight competitive high school teams this year. Five of those IMG teams made the list for the city of Bradenton allowing the western Florida city to come in at No. 10 overall. If the eight IMG teams had been considered a city unto itself, it would have come in at No. 26 overall with 112 points.
The top 25 cities are listed with their cumulative computer rating. The 10 schools that make up the cumulative rating are also included with their computer rating for the 2022 season.
