The Los Angeles Times reported over the weekend that the top junior high school girls basketball prospect in the country
Juju Watkins will be transferring to
Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) from Windward (Los Angeles).
Watkins, a 6-foot guard, is preparing to participate with USA Basketball at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Chile from Aug. 15-21.
HoopGurlz has Watkins pegged as the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2023. She lived up to the billing during Windward's abbreviated spring season, putting up 44 points and 21 rebounds in a win over Sierra Canyon – a league rival of Windward's in past seasons.
Sierra Canyon is moving on to the Mission League in 2021-22 with a roster that will include Watkins and Mackenly Randolph, the daughter of former NBA standout Zach Randolph. The Trailblazers have won four state titles since 2013.
Watkins isn't the only Windward basketball star making the move to Sierra Canyon in the fall. On the boys' side, five-star senior Kijani Wright will be joining Amari Bailey and Bronny James to give the school another title contender.
