Brett Favre's coaching debut got off to a tremendous start on Friday night.
Favre, the offensive coordinator at
Oak Grove (Hattiesburg, Miss.), guided the team to a 64-point performance en route to a 64-6 victory over
Sumrall (Miss.).
Coming off a 7-4 season in which it missed the playoffs, expectations for this year's Oak Grove squad were tempered, as most placed them outside the Top 10 in Class 6A rankings.
After helping out Oak Grove briefly in 2009, Favre officially became an assistant coach in July, when his agent announced he'd be joining the Oak Grove staff.
The game was close early, as Oak Grove led 7-6 after one quarter. However, Oak Grove exploded for 34 unanswered points to open up a 41-6 halftime lead.
It never looked back.
The blowout did nothing to assuage Favre's emotions. According to Clarion-Ledger editor Rusty Hampton, Favre was spotted on the sideline giving one ref an earful.
The win continues Favre's impressive streak of debut victories. He won his debut starts for the Packers, Jets and Vikings respectively during his NFL career.
Favre and Oak Grove will look to go 2-0 next week against Purvis.
