The swine flu outbreak is beginning to take its toll on high school athletics. The University Interscholastic League in Texas today announced that all high school athletic events in the state would be postponed until May 11.
According to UIL Executive Director Charles Breithaupt, the action will suspend the baseball and softball season and it will eliminate the regional track championships. Other events, such as the state golf and tennis championships, are scheduled for May 11 and will go on as scheduled. The state track meet, scheduled for May 13-14, will also go on as scheduled.
The UIL made the decision based on a recommendation from public health officials. The first reported death in the United States from swine flu occurred on Monday in Houston, Texas, where a two-year old Mexican boy died following a trip to Mexico with his family.
