Video: Will Grier's 837-yard gameDavidson Day quarterback, now at Florida, set a national record in 2012.Keeping track of national high school football records is a never-ending project. With over 14,000 high schools playing football, it's inevitable that records can slide through the cracks.
The National Federation of State High School Associations maintains a national record book with many amazing feats and records listed inside. However, some of the more impressive performances that are listed as national records are actually topped by even more incredible achievements that simply haven't made their way into the record book yet. Here's a look at 13 of them.
Top 13 unbreakable high school football records that have actually been broken
Most Completions in a GameListed Record - 53 by Parker Carmichael, Triway (Wooster, Ohio), 2014
Carmichael set the record in the final game of his career, a 13-6 loss to Kenton in the Division IV playoffs. Carmichael completed 53 of 76 passes for 394 yards and one touchdown. His total broke the national record of Grant Sherman of Kenton (Ohio), who had 47 completions in September of 2012.
But Actually - The record is 58 completions, by none other than Sherman. In the penultimate game of his career, a 46-43 win over Bryan, Sherman completed
58 of 78 passes for 518 yards. Sherman's completion total is not listed in the Ohio High Schools Activities Association record book because it does not keep track of passing completions or attempts.
Most Extra Points Kicking in a GameListed Record - 24 by Nelson Stuit, Muskegon (Mich.), 1912
In the early part of the century, high school football was often a case of the "haves" vs. the "have nots." Such was the case when Muskegon battled Hastings on Sept. 28, 1912. Muskegon won 216-0 with Stuit kicking 24 of 30 extra points on the day.
But Actually - The record is 27 extra points. Ten years before Stuit booted his 24 extra points, a player listed only as "Kelting" (newspapers weren't real good about using first names of high school players back in 1902) kicked 27 extra points in Moline's 172-0 win over Galva. The record is listed in the Illinois High School Association's
record book.

Listed Record - 112 – Tyler Lewis, Albemarle (N.C.), 2001
Albemarle had a season for the ages in 2001, scoring 903 points to set a national record. Lewis was the kicker on that team and he boomed 112 extra point kicks through the uprights.
But Actually - The record is 132 extra points. Not only is Lewis' total no longer the national record, Albemarle's season total isn't either. Aledo (Texas) scored a national record (although not included in the NFHS record book) 1,023 points in 2013. The kicker for the Bearcats that season was Chance Nevarez and he converted 132 extra points.
Most Passing Attempts in a Game
Listed Record - 83, Brian Kauffman, Hill Murray (Maplewood, Minn.), 2001
In a 53-41 loss to Minnetonka in 2001, Maplewood-Hill Murray quarterback Brian Kaufman attempted 83 passes on the night, completing 34 (or 36, reports vary). Newspapers as far away as the Los Angeles Times reported on the performance.
But Actually - The record is 87 attempts. Tyler Hutchinson of Greenville (Ill.) threw 87 times and completed 43 in a quarterfinal playoff game against Mt. Carmel. The record is listed on the IHSA website in the football record book.
Most Passing Attempts Per GameListed Record - 49.5, Jarrett Huma, Hopi (Polacca, Ariz.), 1988
Huma had a sensational season for Hopi in 1988 when he completed 350 of 495 passes for 2,923 yards and 26 touchdowns in just 10 games. His 49.5 pass attempts per game has been a national record for 27 years.
But Actually - The record is 63.4 attempts per game. Alex Austin of Glendale (Springfield, Ill.) crushed the record last year with 634 passing attempts in just 10 games. This won't be the last time Austin's name appears in this story.
Most Passing Attempts in a SeasonListed Record - 674, Ben Mauk, Kenton (Ohio), 2001
Mauk's name appears throughout the NFHS Record Book, as he set a number of national records while playing for his father Mike Mauk at Kenton (Ohio).
But Actually - The record is 676. While Kenton is certainly one of the most pass-happy schools in the country, so is Pulaski Academy (Little Rock, Ark.). In 2009, quarterback Will Nicks attempted 676 passes, completing 400, for 4,909 yards. The record is listed in the Arkansas High School Activities Association Record Book.
Most Passing Yards in a GameListed Record - 764, David Koral, Pacific Palisades (Palisades, Calif.), 2000
When Koral threw for 764 yards against Grant (Van Nuys, Calif.) in 2000, he broke the record (674 by Rhett Lashlee of Shiloh Christian) by nearly 100 yards.
But Actually - The record is 837 yards. Will Grier threw for 837 yards in a 104-80 win over Harrells Christian Academy in 2012. The tricky part here is that Grier's school, Davidson Day (Davidson, N.C.), is not a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and thus does not qualify to be in the NFHS Record Book. MaxPreps makes no such distinction and counts Grier's mark as a national record.
Most Plays Per GameListed Record - 54.6, Todd Harings, McDonelle (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), 1984
Certainly one of the more obscure records, there are probably a number of players who have averaged more than 55 plays per game, especially in an age where 50 passing attempts in a game has become the norm. The NFHS Record Book, however, lists Harings' average of 54.6 from 1984 as the record.
But Actually – The record is 78.8 plays. Austin, again, is the culprit here as he had 634 passing attempts and 154 rushing attempts last season to account for 788 plays in 10 games.
Most Kicking PointsListed Record - 148, Taylor Begley, Boyle County (Danville, Ky.), 2000
Begley booted 17 field goals for Boyle County in 2000 and he also had 97 extra points to give him a national-record 148 kicking points.
But Actually – The record is 175 kicking points. Cole Hedlund of Argyle (Texas) booted 24 field goals in 2013 to become the nation's all-time field goal kicker with 56, which is listed in the NFHS Record Book. What's not included is the 103 extra points Hedlund also kicked that year, which gives him 175 kicking points.
Most Receiving TDs in a SeasonListed Record - 34, Kirby Moore, Prosser (Wash.), 2008
Moore and his brother Kellen set all kinds of passing records at Prosser playing for father Tom. Kirby had a huge senior year, catching 34 touchdown passes and finishing with a national-record 95 career touchdown receptions.
But Actually - The record is 39 touchdown receptions. Tren'Davian Dickson of Navasota (Texas) set the record last year while earning MaxPreps National Junior Player of the Year honors.
Most Receiving Yards in a CareerListed Record - 6,356, Dorial Green-Beckham, Hillcrest (Springfield, Mo.), 2008-11
Green-Beckham was one of the nation's top prospects as a senior at Hillcrest and he broke the career record of Evangel Christian's Abram Booty by nearly 500 yards.
But Actually - The record is 6,566 yards. Trey Quinn of Barbe (Lake Charles, La.) was not nearly as highly recruited as Green-Beckham, but that didn't stop him from putting up incredible numbers throughout his four-year career, which ended in 2013. While the Louisiana High School Athletic Association does not have an official record book, Quinn's career totals are easily found on the Barbe High School football team
website.
Most Rushing Attempts in a GameListed Record - 487, Mike Sutkamp, Bellevue (Ky.), 1981
Sutkamp was a workhorse in 1981, carrying the ball 487 times to break Billy Sims' national record of 441 carries.
But Actually - The record is 498 carries. In 2010, David Mora of Mason (Texas) set the national record while racking up 3,573 yards. The total is listed by both Dave Campbell's Texas Football and Texas historian Joe Lee Smith as the state record.
Most Touchdown PassesListed Record - 219, Maty Mauk, Kenton (Ohio), 2008-11
Mauk had a fabulous four-year career at Kenton, breaking his own brother's career touchdown mark and finishing with 219.
But Actually - The record is 229. Jake Browning of Folsom (Calif.) capped a three-year career by tying a national record with 91 touchdown passes in 2015 (a single-season record that is not listed in the NFHS record book but ties the mark set by Corey Robinson of Lone Oak). His 91 TDs gave him 229 for his career.
Note: We encourage coaches to
send in their player's record-breaking achievements into the NFHS Record Book so that their athletes can be included.
