Texas top 10 high school football games of the week

La Vega at China Springs tops 10 terrific matchups in the Lone Star state, while Cameron Yoe and Rockdale meet in the Battle of the Bell.


1. La Vega (Waco) 6-0 at China Spring 6-0, 7:30 p.m. Friday
La Vega, the defending Class 4A-DI state champion, has won 22 straight games and is led by returning quarterback Jamal Williams. China Spring was 12-2 last year with both of its losses to La Vega (16-14 in district and 20-7 in a regional final playoff game). Versatile Keaton Dudik is the Cougars' big-play man as a rusher and receiver. Both teams won openers last week in District 13-4A DI.

2. Port Neches-Groves (Port Neches) 6-0 at Port Arthur Memorial (Port Arthur) 5-0, 7 p.m. Friday
The District 22-5A title could be the prize in this clash between teams with 4-0 league records. Memorial won only three games last season while in Class 6A, but the Titans' fortunes are changing with a healthy quarterback Kadon Harrison, a Louisiana-Lafayette pledge and the son of Memorial head coach Kenny Harrison. For its quarterback, Port Neches-Groves turned to sophomore Roschon Johnson this fall and he has responded.

3. Cameron Yoe (Cameron) 6-1 at Rockdale 5-1, 7:30 p.m. Friday
The annual Battle of the Bell brings together a pair of rivals unbeaten so far in District 10-3A DI. The Yoemen (3-0), state finalists a year ago, are humming along under the leadership of quarterback Zack Andress (1,532 passing yards, 26 touchdowns). Rockdale (2-0) features explosive running back Davion Ford (581 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns).

4. Cedar Park 6-0 at Georgetown 6-1, 7:30 p.m. Friday
Cedar Park, the defending Class 5A-DII state champion, owns a 22-game winning streak, including a 4-0 mark in District 19-5A. Timberwolves quarterback Omar Alzer has rushed and passed for a combined 2,456 yards and 26 touchdowns. Despite losing to Cedar Park 47-7 last year, Georgetown went two rounds in the playoffs and is led by senior quarterback Chandler Herman (1,969 passing yards, 22 touchdowns).

5. Allen 6-0 at Guyer (Denton) 5-1, 7 p.m. Friday
This District 6-6A showdown matches 3-0 teams in league play. Both are conditioned to making long playoff runs. Allen won three consecutive state championships starting in 2012 and made it to the state semifinals last year. Quarterback Mitchell Jonke (1,031 passing yards, nine touchdowns) is a Brown University commit. Guyer has a dynamic running back duo of Myron Mason (742 yards, eight touchdowns) and Noah Cain (941 yards, 12 touchdowns). 6. Grapevine 6-0 at Richland (North Richland Hills) 6-0, 7:30 p.m. Friday
The drop to Class 5A is working well for Richland as it goes into a District 8-5A showdown with Grapevine. Both are 3-0 in league play. Richland senior quarterback Trae Self has passed for 1,541 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Grapevine junior quarterback Alan Bowman has similar numbers: 1,432 passing yards and 22 touchdowns.

7. Langham Creek (Houston) 5-1 at Cypress Ranch (Houston) 6-0, 7 p.m. Friday
Cypress Ranch leads District 17-6A with a 5-0 record and Langham Creek is a game back at 4-1. Langham Creek coach Todd Thompson believes in spreading the ball around, but the one constant is senior running back Toneil Carter (575 rushing yards, eight touchdowns). Meanwhile, back at Cypress Ranch, senior E.J. Thompson is at 586 rushing yards and five scores.

8. Ray (Corpus Christi) 6-0 at Calallen (Corpus Christi) 5-1, 7:30 p.m. Friday
This game could give the winner a leg up on the 11-team District 30-5A title. Both are 4-0 in league competition. Ray is one of the state's best turn-around stories coming off a 2-8 campaign a season ago. The Texans depend on the running and passing of sophomore Brad Breckenridge. Calallen and legendary coach Phil Danaher are being rewarded for putting trust in sophomore running back A.J. Brown (559 yards, six touchdowns).

9. Gladewater 5-0 at Gilmer 5-1, 7:30 p.m. Friday
Both East Texas schools are 1-0 in District 7-4A DI. Gilmer junior quarterback Aaron Brown is averaging 366 passing yards per game and has thrown for 22 touchdowns. Gladewater last faced Gilmer in a 2014 third-round playoff game won by Gilmer 41-35. Gilmer went on to capture a state title that season with a 16-0 record.


10. Cisco 4-1 at Coleman 5-1, 7:30 p.m. Friday
Both teams are 1-0 in District 4-3A DII. Cisco senior quarterback Kase Gayle has passed for 456 yards, rushed for 598 and accounted for 11 touchdowns. The Bluecats of Coleman return 17 starters from the team that knocked Cisco out of the playoffs in the second round last year in two overtimes, 34-28.
