Video: 2019 Fall MaxPreps Cup - Carmel
A perennial contender, the Indiana school is the top boys program after the fall season.
The national boys sports leader has been a familiar figure atop the MaxPreps Cup standings in the past while the girls sports leader is a new face on the list.
Carmel (Ind.) has long been one of the top teams in the MaxPreps Cup standings, finishing among the top teams every year since MaxPreps first began doing the rankings in 2012. The Greyhounds surged to the top of the boys standings this fall thanks to a first-place finish in football and a state championship in boys tennis.
Benet Academy (Lisle, Ill.), meanwhile, has never been close to the top of the MaxPreps Cup standings. In fact, Benet Academy has never finished among the top 100 final teams any of the past seven years. This fall has been different for Benet Academy, however. The Redwings won a girls volleyball state championship for the fourth time in school history while the girls cross country team won its first state championship. The girls tennis team, meanwhile, finished among the top two in the state for only the second time in school history.
The MaxPreps Cup endeavors to determine the top high school athletic
programs in the country based on several factors, including state
championships, state runner-up finishes and placement in national
rankings. Points are also awarded based on the size of the state, the
popularity of the sport, the enrollment playoff level and the number of
teams competing in the enrollment playoff level. National rankings used
include the MaxPreps Top 25 rankings, the MaxPreps computer rankings,
cross country rankings by Dyestat and field hockey rankings by
MaxHockey.
For medium schools, Bolles (Jacksonville, Fla.), which dominated boys and girls swimming this fall, is the top team while Signal Mountain (Tenn.), which won four state titles this fall, is the top small schools program. Small schools are those that generally have less than 1,000 students while medium-sized schools have between 1,000 and 2,000 students.
Champlain Valley Union (Hinesburg, Vt.), the overall fall leader, is the public schools leader while Benet Academy is tops among private schools.
