City of Palms Classic: Wesleyan Christian Academy snaps Mater Dei's 46-game win streak

Here's a rundown of Saturday action at the prestigious City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Five nationally-ranked teams are competing for the title in the event's 17-team tournament field.

Quarterfinals

Trinity (Louisville, Ky.) 62
Oak Ridge (Orlando, Fla.) 57
The state of Kentucky will have a team in the semifinals as Trinity overcame a 25-point performance from Oak Ridge senior star Antonio Blakeney to advance. The Shamrocks received 20 points from Christian Thieneman to go along with 12 points and 10 rebounds from Louisville Cardinals signee Raymond Spalding, a 6-foot-9 forward. Oak Ridge senior forward Alex Owens also had a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) 55
Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.) 52
Jaylen Brown turned in his second big performance in as many nights, finishing with 19 points, nine rebounds and three steals to lead the Wildcats to the semifinals. The 6-6 senior wing is the No. 2 senior prospect in high school basketball according to 247Sports.com. Syracuse signee Franklin Howard came up with 16 points and five assists for Paul VI, which reached the City of Palms final a year ago.

Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) 62
St. Francis (Alpharetta, Ga.) 59
Senior forward Ben Simmons strengthened his national player of the year candidacy by piling up 37 points and 18 rebounds for No. 1-ranked Montverde Academy. The Eagles desperately needed his production as Malik Beasley and Kobi Jordan-Simmons combined for 50 points for St. Francis. Montverde meets Trinity on Monday and would reach the championship game in Fort Myers for the third year in a row with a win.

Wesleyan Christian Academy (High Point, N.C.) 67
Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) 62
Harry Giles and the Trojans snapped Mater Dei's 46-game win streak with a late rally after trailing for most of the contest. Giles, a consensus five star junior forward, scored 29 points as Wesleyan Christian Academy improved to 12-0. A defending state champ in the North Carolina independent school ranks, Wesleyan will meet Wheeler in Monday's second semifinal. Mater Dei had not lost since March of 2013.

Consolation

Wayne (Huber Heights, Ohio) 67
Riverside Academy (Reserve, La.) 62
Using a balanced scoring effort, Wayne led by 13 points at halftime and held on to advance in the consolation bracket. Iowa signee Ahmad Wagner led the Warriors with 14 points while Rodrick Caldwell notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Malik Crowfield produced a game-high 20 points for Riverside Academy.

Whitney Young (Chicago) 64
Bentonville (Ark.) 52
After Rodney Herenton Jr. led Whitney Young with 27 points Friday, brother Willie Herenton paced the Dolphins on Saturday with 15 points in a consolation bracket victory. Vanderbilt recruit Joseph Toye also had 15 for the Chicago powerhouse.

Webster Groves (Mo.) 65
Florida Air Academy (Melbourne, Fla.) 54
Cameron Hilton, a 6-1 senior wing, tallied 21 points and 11 rebounds to spark Webster Groves. The contest was delayed when the lights went out for a period of time at Bishop Verot High School.

Sunshine Series (non-tournament)

Miami Beach (Fla.) 58
Suwannee (Live Oak, Fla.) 55
Balance overcame a spectacular individual performance in this showcase affair. University of Florida-bound forward Kevarrius Hayes put up 25 points and grabbed 11 boards for Suwanee. But the Hi-Tides countered with four players in double figures, including 7-foot sophomore Zach Brown with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
