WRESTLING: LUGOFF-ELGIN WINS BEARCAT INVITATIONALThe
Lugoff-Elgin (Lugoff) Demons needed the day's final match to capture the 31st annual Bearcat Invitational wrestling tournament.
When heavyweight Allen Jenerette pinned his opponent in a third-place match, it gave the Demons 253 points, which was enough to hold off Concord N.C.'s J.M. Robinson High School, which had 249.5 points.
The Demons had three champions in the event, as brothers Will (171 pounds) and Zach (189) Connell and Theo Shepherd (215) each captured individual championships.
Lugoff-Elgin won the 3A state championship last season but has moved to the 4A classification this year. The Demons are currently ranked sixth in 4A.
BECK WINS 200TH MATCHRock Hill wrestler Weston Beck became the first 4A wrestler to win 200 matches in his career, according to SCMat.com.
Beck won his 200th match over the Christmas holidays and won the 130-pound division at the coveted Bearcat Invitational. Beck, a two-time state champion, is currently ranked first in the state's 135-pound class.
