The 2021 high school football season in West Virginia kicks off next week and MaxPreps has your look at the state's top teams. Martinsburg, which saw its string of four straight AAA state titles end
with a first round forfeit due to COVID last year, claims the top spot in our preseason rankings.
The Bulldogs had their 57-game win streak snapped week 2 last season, falling to Spring Valley 22-20. They outscored their other five opponents 329-60 before a season-ending forfeit loss.
Spring Valley, which also forfeited its first round playoff game a year ago, features the state’s top prospect in tight end
Corbin Page who has committed to West Virginia.
The state’s No. 2 and 3 prospects are Poca tight end
Toby Payne and Fairmont two-way lineman
Eric Smith — committed to Marshall and Miami (OH), respectively.
South Charleston, which claimed the program’s fifth state title last year, returns junior quarterback
Trey Dunn who was named first team WVSWA Class 3A All-State after throwing for 1,865 yards and 23 touchdowns and rushing for 289 yards and seven touchdowns in six games. He’s accounted for 52 touchdowns in two years.
Princeton junior quarterback
Grant Cochran was named second team WVSWA Class 3A All-State last year after throwing for 2,320 yards and 27 touchdowns in nine games. He has 4,344 career passing yards and 43 touchdowns.
Last year the COVID-19 pandemic caused the West Virginia Secondary
School Activieties Commission to cancel it’s annual trio of state
football championship games known as the Super Six. Despite that, three
teams were awarded state titles.
The WVSSAC named South Charleston (Class AAA), Fairmont (AA) and St.
Marys (A) state champions. Based on the West Virginia Department of
Education’s COVID-19 school opening map, those three teams were the only
ones left able to play in the championship games due to their
respective counties’ color designation. Only Fairmont and St. Mary’s
played and won semifinal games.
