From the North: Brookside Christian (Stockton)The Knights have already qualified for the bowl games after winning the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI playoffs. Brookside Christian has a high-scoring offense that produced 590 points in 11 games. Quarterback
Tony Rodriguezwas among the national stat stars all season long while throwing for 3,080 yards and 44 touchdowns with just four interceptions. His best outing included a 9-touchdown performance. He threw for over 400 yards three times. A Middletown win over Salesian (Richmond) in the North Coast Section playoffs could keep the Knights from being selected, however Salesian, a Division III school (barely), likely has the edge over Middletown in that contest.
From the South: Bishop's (La Jolla)In Southern California, there may not be three small school candidates. If that's the case, the selection committee has the option of choosing the next smallest Division III school to come up with three candidates. It is possible that the San Diego, Southern and Central Sections will all fail to produce a section champion with an enrollment under 500. If that's the case, Bishop's (La Jolla) could be the team to get the nod. With an enrollment of 555, the Knights could edge out the similarly named Bishop Broncos (who must defeat Boron to qualify). Bishop's defeated Bishop early in the season, handing the Broncos their only loss. Bishop's will have to defeat Parker, the defending small school representative from Southern California, in the San Diego Section Division V championship game.
