Video: High school baseball teams go medieval during rain delay
See what the Darien and Warde baseball teams did to pass time during a stoppageRain delays during baseball games are rarely fun, as fans and players alike sit idly waiting for weather to clear and play to presume.
Where most see a period of frustration and annoyance,
Darien (Conn.) and
Warde (Fairfield, Conn.) saw opportunity.
The two opponents came together for hilarious antics to help pass the time.
First, the two schools engaged in a Revolutionary War-esque shootout, marching out with a drummer boy, bearing "muskets" (baseball bats), and firing their faux weapons across the infield at their enemy.
The two teams then traveled farther back in time, to the medieval era, where they engaged in a pseudo-jousting competition, where players donned armor (catchers equipment), grabbed a joust (again, baseball bats) and mounted their steeds (teammates) for a joust.
When the game finally resumed, Darien won 6-1, but the real story was the rain delay entertainment.
"I've always heard about rain delay antics, so it was awesome to finally see in person," said Alex Hager, Darien's play-by-play announcer. "The team spends so much time together and you can tell that a lot of the guys are great friends. Both of the teams were laughing a lot and just having an all-around great time.
It looked like a scene from Medieval Times at a Connecticut high school baseball game this week.
