For all his lofty expectations,
Eric Fernandez delivers. The 6-foot-4, 185-pound junior from
Riviera Prep (Miami) leads Florida high school baseball in RBI with 54, according to MaxPreps leaderboards.
The right-handed pitcher and shortstop also has a sweet left-handed swing, which has produced RBI in all but four of the 24 games he's played.
Fernandez, who committed to the University of Miami as a freshman, is hitting .557 (45 of 78) with 12 doubles, a triple and eight home runs. He's driven in at least three runs 11 times this season with a high of six during a 12-0 win over Sunset.
In addition to his relief pitching prowess — he has nine saves and hasn't allowed an earned run yet — he's also 16 of 16 in stolen base attempts.
Only two other players in the state have 40 RBI or more, including Caden McDonald of Sickles (Tampa), who ranks second with 41.
MaxPreps compiles leaderboards from statistics supplied by high school coaches from throughout Florida and the country.
