The
Allen High School Eagles are not your average school by any stretch. Boasting a perfect record for three straight seasons — Friday night was a night to celebrate. Dignitaries, the local media, the Texas Army National Guard, and hundreds of screaming fans honored the Eagles' accomplishment of being the No. 1 team in America in the Max Preps Xcellent 25 rankings out of 16,000 schools across America. On Jan. 23, the Allen Eagles were honored on the 10th Annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions presented by the National Guard.
The ceremony fell into a night packed with competition and festivities during the Eagles' varsity basketball game. To kick off the halftime event, Steve Payne, Allen's principal, called the Eagles football team out to the floor for one last celebration to commemorate an unforgettable season. First, the team was presented with the Chevrolet 6A Division Team of the Year Award and the fans celebrated with approval. But when Steve Spiewak from MaxPreps announced the Eagles' number one ranking, the gymnasium erupted with applause and a standing ovation.
Once the fans finally calmed, Sergeant Paul McCallister from the Texas Army National Guard took the microphone for the most important award presentation of the evening — the presentation of the Army National Guard national ranking trophy. SGT McCallister commended the team for its exemplary demonstration of teamwork, perseverance, and championship mentality throughout the season. Then — inexplicably — the crowd jumped back up for another standing ovation, erupting in applause for the Eagles, as Sergeant McCallister presented the "Minuteman" trophy to coach Tom Westerberg.
This electric evening concluded an amazing year to remember for the Eagles as coach Westerberg thanked the fans and carried the Minuteman trophy off of the court to the Eagles' overflowing trophy case.
Congratulations to the Allen football team on its national ranking and state title!
