Early Contenders: Top 10 high school quarterbacks heading into 2017 season

There's a reason Bailey is the only sophomore quarterback to crack this list. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound pro-style QB is arguably the top Class of 2020 product in the country. He possesses desired measurables, maturity and colossal cannon beyond his years. The MaxPreps first team Freshman All-American completed 208-of-363 passes for 2,812 yards and 21 touchdowns, while earning Class AAAAAAA All-State honorable mention. He already holds 17 offers with Florida and Georgia leading the pack for his services.

9. Dakereon Joyner, Fort Dorchester (North Charleston, S.C.)
Joyner has one of the best highlight tapes in America. The electrifying QB can reel off a home-run with his legs or destroy defenses on extended plays. He's as dangerous as they come. The South Carolina commit racked up 3,643 passing yards, 1,091 rushing yards and 56 total touchdowns in piloting the Patriots to the Class 5A state semifinals in the fall.

8. Devin Leary, Timber Creek Regional (Erial, N.J.)
The N.C. State commit might have the highest football IQ of this group, and is one of New Jersey's most decorated QBs of all time. The 4-star gunslinger posted 3,688 passing yards, 51 total touchdowns (both single-season state records) and a 137 passer rating while guiding the undefeated Chargers to a second straight New Jersey state crown last season.

7. Justin Rogers, Parkway (Bossier City, La.)
Rogers is deadly with the deep ball and lethal with his legs when plays break down. The country's No. 6 dual-threat QB tallied 3,828 total yards and 42 total touchdowns last season while leading Parkway to the Louisiana Class 5A state quarterfinals. The TCU commit wowed at the Elite 11 finals at The Opening last weekend with a second-place finish. Rogers has the nation's top-rated receiver in Terrace Marshall Jr. at his disposal — so expect fireworks this season.

6. Matt Corral, Long Beach Poly (Calif.)
Corral proved he has the strongest arm in the country after unleashing a 77-yard bomb to capture the Long Ball Challenge at The Opening last weekend. He's also crafty under duress. The nation's No. 2 pro-style signal-caller threw for 3,025 yards and 22 touchdowns last fall at Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) before transferring to Southern California power Long Beach Poly. Corral will link up with 5-star receiver Jalen Hall this year to form a dynamic duo. Georgia appears to be the landing spot for this 5-star QB.

5. Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas)
The country's third-rated dual-threat QB is as dynamic as they come. The UCLA commit notched 837 total yards and 14 TDs last fall as a wide receiver for the national champion Gaels. Thompson-Robinson inherits a Bishop Gorman squad riding a 54-game win streak (second nationally), even though he's yet to start a varsity game under center. But the raw, athletic talent is eyeing a national title repeat and has all the makings of becoming a superstar.

4. Tanner McKee, Centennial (Corona, Calif.)
The nation's fourth-rated pro-style QB can sling it with the best of them. McKee has prototypical size, high upside, spot-on accuracy and operates one of the most prolific offenses in the country. He showcased his complete skill set by finishing third overall in the Elite 11 finals at The Opening. The MaxPreps second team All-American completed 73 percent of his passes for 3,522 yards and 36 touchdowns last fall for the country's No. 15 team (11-2). Stanford and Texas are the top two programs vying for his talents.

3. Justin Fields, Harrison (Kennesaw, Ga.)
Fields is undoubtedly the hottest recruit in America and proved he was in a league of his own with arguably the best performance The Opening has ever had from a quarterback in its seven-year history. Fields was named the winner of the Elite 11 competition, his 7-on-7 team won the title and he completed 72 percent of his passes and threw 16 TDs with no interceptions. He's now considered the nation's top overall prospect in the 2018 Class by 247Sports. The country's No. 1 dual-threat QB also runs a blazing 4.51 40-yard dash. He passed for 2,253 yards, rushed for 977 and accounted for 32 TDs in leading Harrison to the second round of the Georgia Class AAAAAA state playoffs last fall. Fields holds 40 offers and decommitted from Penn State in early June. Florida, Florida State and Georgia are the main suitors contending for his services.

2. Trevor Lawrence, Cartersville (Ga.)
Lawrence is the top pro-style QB in the country for a reason. The Clemson commit has desired measurables, can deliver all the throws and has that "it" factor. Most importantly, he's the ultimate winner. The MaxPreps 2016 Junior Player of the Year led the Hurricanes to a 15-0 record and second straight AAAA Georgia state title by completing 250-of-406 passes for 3,904 yards and 51 scores last fall. Lawrence is 42-2 as a starter and winner of 30 straight games. He's also 2,477 yards and 40 touchdowns from breaking the state record of 13,077 and 159 held by former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson of Gainesville.

1. J.T. Daniels, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.)
Daniels is our top overall QB  for a reason — and he's only a junior. The nation's No. 1 pro-style QB in the class of 2019 possesses a superior football IQ, as well as superb touch and accuracy on all his throws. Daniels also calls some of his own plays, and his pre-snap reads are on point. He completed an unheard of 75 percent of his passes (315 of 423) for 4,849 yards and 67 touchdowns last season. Daniels tossed a scant six interceptions as Mater Dei averaged 476 yards and 57 points per game in 2016. He claimed MaxPreps Sophomore Player of the Year honors and piloted the ninth-ranked Monarchs to a 13-0 record before losing to St. John Bosco (Bellflower) in the Southern Section Division I championship game. He's one of the big reasons Mater Dei is in the hunt for a national championship this year. The combination of 5-star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown might be the most prolific duo in America. Daniels appears pegged for Stanford.
