The spring sports season has been put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic and in some cases may be canceled altogether.
As a result, a number of players, coaches and teams missed out on a shot to break state and national records.
Here is a sampling of those missed opportunities.
SOFTBALL
A two-sport star in basketball and softball, Spaid was a
MaxPreps Junior All-American last year after hitting 25 home runs. With 55 career home runs, Spaid was 11 away from breaking the Illinois state record. Spaid also was closing in on the state runs scored record of 233. She had 183 career runs scored.
A contender last year for MaxPreps National Player of the Year, Coleman has scored 261 runs in her career (including runs scored this year before the season was postponed) and the state record is 275. Coleman already holds the state record for career hits with 267.

Alexia Morales, Chapin (El Paso, Texas)If Coleman didn't set the Texas state record for runs scored, Morales might have. She had 256 career runs scored when her season was suspended.
Off to a tremendous start in 2020, Dickinson had hit a national best 29 triples in 23 games, including 10 triples by freshman
Kayden Henry. The national record for triples in a season by a team is 54, according to the National Federation of High Schools record book.
One of the leading hitters in the nation last year with a .754 average, Bird had 138 career RBI entering the 2020 season. She needed 57 RBI to break the state record according to the NFHS record book.
With 138 career stolen bases, Charles is 18 away from breaking the Wisconsin state record of 155.

BOYS LACROSSE
With 320 career goals by the end of his junior year, Caporuscio had a shot at breaking the national record of 444. Considering Caporuscio had 126 goals as a freshman, the career mark was within his reach. He also needed 119 points to break the Pennsylvania career points record. He had 195 points as a junior.
BASEBALL
Collins needed just nine wins to become the all-time wins leader among high school baseball coaches. He had 2,107 wins entering the season and the all-time record is 2,115. Latta was unable to play any games this season for Collins to add to his total.
Michigan all-time coaching wins leader Pat O'Keefe retired prior to the 2020 season, leaving Tuttle with the chance to become the state's all-time wins leader. O'Keefe ended his career with 1,315 wins while Tuttle was beginning the 2020 season with 1,297 career wins.
Whittaker entered the 2020 season 13 wins away from breaking the state record for career wins. Bill Miller of Pleasure Ridge Park has the record with 1,144 wins while Whittaker has 1,132.
With six home runs this season, Wilks has 50 for his career. The Mississippi state record is 60. He had a good chance to break the record considering that he had hit double figures in home runs each of the past three seasons.
GIRLS GOLF
One of the most decorated golfers in the nation, Morard is ranked No. 1 in the state by the Junior Golf Association and No. 4 in the nation. She has won six AJGA championships. A three-time individual high school champion, Morard was looking to become the first four-time champion in Alabama High School Athletic Association history.
BOYS TRACK
While the 800-meter relay is not one of the more common races, the event produced three teams last year that posted times among the top 20 all-time. One of those teams was Klein Forest, which had clocked a national best time of 1 minute, 24.52 seconds on Feb. 15. That time would be enough to rank among the best of all-time and is one second away from the national record of 1:23.52.
GIRLS TRACK
Parks and Starliper posted two of the best 1,600 meter times of all-time last year. Parks had a time of 4:37.07 last year, good for No. 4 all-time, according to the NFHS record book. Meanwhile, Starliper had a time of 4:37.45, good for No. 5 all-time.
Vanriele and Willis both posted 800-meter times last year that rank among the best of all-time. Vanriele had a time of 2:05.43, which ranks eighth. Willis, a sophomore, set the third fastest 800-meter time of all-time during the indoor track season in February. As a freshman, Willis had an outdoor time of 2:05.68, which ranks No. 13 all-time.
Already a member of the record-setting 400-meter relay team that the national record in the event last spring, Hollis also had a shot at setting a record in the 100 hurdles. She posted the 17th-best time of all-time last year at 13.40 seconds.
SPRING SPORTS
Punahou (Honolulu) — The coronavirus prevented Punahou from adding to its incredible national record state championship win totals in multiple sports. Punahou has 49 state championships in boys tennis, 45 state championships in girls tennis, 36 state championships in boys volleyball, and 36 state championships in girls track and field. All of those state championship win totals rank No. 1 in those respective sports, according to the NFHS record book.
