One of the nation’s outstanding junior quarterbacks,
Maty Mauk, opened his season Friday with a dominating performance as Kenton (Ohio) rolled past Coldwater (Ohio), 50-31.

The son of Kenton head coach/athletic director, Mike Mauk, the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder fired 60 passes, completing 37 for 451 yards and five touchdowns.
He showed great versatility, too, by running 21 times for 86 yards and two other touchdowns.
* Senior quarterback
Justin Worley fired five touchdown passes in a period of 4:50 during the third quarter as Northwestern (Rock Hill, S.C.) rallied from a 20-7 deficit to defeat South Pointe (Rock Hill), 42-20, before a standing-room crowd of 9,500.
Worley, who has committed to the University of Tennessee, completed 12-of-12 passes in the second half and finished with 310 yards through the air.

Jadeveon Clowney made nine tackles, four for losses, and two sacks.
* Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) rallied to defeat Westlake (Austin), 32-21, before 30,000 at Royal Memorial Stadium. Scoring 22 unanswered points, the three-time defending state champions ran their winning streak to 47 games.
Quarterback
Michael Brewer passed for 289 yards and 6-5 junior Griffin Gilbert – brother of University of Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert - snared nine aerials for 164 yards to earn game MVP honors. He had to step up when last year’s top receiver, Conner Floyd, suffered a severe leg injury.

Qyen Griffin ran 25 times for 286 yards and six touchdowns as South Panola (Batesville, Miss.) routed Colquitt County (Moultrie, Ga.), 65-35. Kendrick Market scored on an 82-yard interception and a 43-yard run.

Schaumburg (Schaumburg, Ill.) defeated Maine South (Park Ridge, Ill.), 29-17, to end a 28-game winning streak by the two-time defending Class 8A state champions. Senior Shepard Little sparked the winners by running 32 times for 239 yards and scoring two touchdowns.
* Two of the nation’s premier running backs went head to head as Madison (San Antonio, Texas) edged Steele (Cibolo, Texas), 28-23, before a crowd of 10,525. Senior
Aaron Green paced Madison by rushing for 169 yards and three touchdowns. Senior
Malcolm Brown had 179 yards and two touchdowns for the losers.

Mike Williams completed 20 of 36 passes for 428 yards and four touchdowns as Lake Cormorant (Miss.) rolled past Horn Lake (Miss.), 33-17. Jordan Taylor was on the receiving end of nine passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns.
* Guyer (Denton, Texas) routed Waxahachie, 45-7, as quarterback
J.W. Walsh completed 15 of 20 passes for 340 yards and four touchdowns.

Konnor Baker passed for 375 yards and six touchdowns as Ada (Ohio) routed Hardin Northern (Dola, Ohio), 69-7.
* If the first game is a good indication, the University of Houston is getting a good and versatile one in
C. J. McElroy. The
Clear Creek (League City, Texas) senior did a little bit of everything in a 49-14 win over Pasadena Memorial on Friday. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound receiver and running back had five rushes for 149 yards and two scores, four catches for 85 yards and one touchdown, he returned a kickoff 97 yards for another score and he completed a 74-yard pass for yet one more touchdown. He had a hand in five touchdowns in four different ways.
And Pasadena Memorial is no slouch. The Mavericks made the 5A playoffs last year and finished 9-3.
