Video: 6-foot-10 freshman phenom Charles Bassey makes debutNative of Nigeria could be top prospect in high school basketball's Class of 2019.Toronto Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri may have given an early assist to one of high school basketball's top freshman this year.
Detailing Ujiri's work with the Giants of Africa basketball camp in Nigeria,
Evan Rosser of Sportsnet.ca wrote about 14-year old standout
Charles Bassey, who went on to garner MVP honors at the event.
According to Rosser's account, Bassey was discovered two years ago "selling fried chickens by the side of the road."
Bassey has come a long way since then.
This week in San Antonio, the 6-foot-10 big man made his American high school debut at
St. Anthony (San Antonio) against Stony Point and promptly recorded a triple-double – 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks.
It shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Recruiting guru Frank Burlison named
Bassey his most outstanding player of the fall Pangos All-Frosh/Soph camp circuit, which hit four basketball hotbeds and included more than 750 of the country's best 2018 and 2019 prospects.
