MaxPreps host Myckena Guerrero breaks down the Top 25 girls basketball teams in the country.
Five girls from five different states were announced Monday as finalists for the Naismith High School Player of the Year award at the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
In addition, five coaches — also from different states — were announced as finalists for Coach of the Year honors.
The players (in alphabetical order):
Jenna Brown, Lovett (Atlanta, Ga.)The 5-foot-10 point guard has led Lovett to a 24-4 record and 14-0 regional mark. She's the No. 20 recruit in the country, according to espnW HoopGurlz and signed to play at Stanford.
Charli Collier, Barbers Hill (Mt. Belvieu, Texas)The 6-5 post was a MaxPreps third-team All-American last season. She's leading the Eagles to a 28-2 record currently and next season she'll be lacing them up at Connecticut. She's ranked the No. 2 senior in the country.
Amira Collins, Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.)The 6-3 post leads the No. 7 team in the country. She's ranked the No. 69 senior in the country and next season will play at Tennessee.
Aquira Decosta, St. Mary's (Stockton, Calif.)The 6-2 wing was a preseason MaxPreps All-American who leads the No. 5 team in the country (22-2). DeCosta, ranked the No. 4 senior in the nation, has signed with Baylor.
Christyn Williams Central Arkansas Christian (North Little Rock, Ark.)The 5-11 guard is the No. 1 ranked senior in the country. She is averaging 25.4 points and 9.9 rebounds a game for the 30-1 Mustangs. She's also headed to Connecticut.
The five coaches up for the top award are Scott Allen of Paul VI; Bob Mackey of
Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.); Sue Phillips of
Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.); Jonathan Scribner of
St. John's (Washington, D.C.) and Cathy Self-Morgan of
Duncanville (Texas).
