Justin Sawmiller of Kenton (Ohio) and Trey Quinn of Barbe (Lake Charles, La.) hold the national records for career receptions and yards, but if history is any indication, they won't hold them for long.
Sawmiller and Quinn top the MaxPreps list of the Top 50 all-time career
receiving yardage leaders and the Top 50 all-time career receptions
leaders.
Sawmiller set the record with 445 career catches from 2010 to 2013, making him at least the 14th player to hold the career receptions mark over the past 68 years. Meanwhile, Quinn, with his 6,566 career yards from 2010 to 2013, is at least the eighth player to hold the record during the same time period.
Roy Chapman of Temple (Texas) is believed to be the first receiver with over 100 career catches, grabbing 103 from 1950 to 1952. He held the mark until Wayne Gilbert of Red Bluff (Calif.) caught at least 116 passes from 1953 to 1955. The uncle of former Buffalo Bills quarterback Gale Gilbert and great uncle of current Cleveland Brown quarterback Garrett Gilbert, Wayne Gilbert played three seasons on the varsity at Red Bluff, but only his junior and senior seasons are known.
While the record is sketchy between 1955 and 1969, Joe Goldsmith of Kathleen (Fla.) raised the mark to 158 catches, only to be surpassed by John McKay of Bishop Amat (La Puente, Calif.) with 207 catches in 1970. McKay teamed up with Pat Haden at Bishop Amat and both later played at Southern California for McKay's father.
McKay's reception total lasted just two seasons as Bob Thomas of King of Prussia (Upper Merion, Pa.) raised the record to 213 receptions from 1970 to 1972. Thomas held the record until 1985 when Todd DiCello of Healdsburg caught 216 passes.
Over the next 28 seasons, the record is broken eight times. Nati Valdez of Mission (Texas) raised it to 256 in 1988, Maurice Mebane of Cummings (Burlington, N.C.) upped it to 292 in 1992, Abram Booty of Evangel Christian Academy (Shreveport) put the mark at 302 in 1996, Tommy Pettit of Kenton (Ohio) took it to 308 in 2004, Christopher Fulmer of Nitro (W.Va.) put it at 329 in 2005, Ben Wonderly of Fairview (Sherwood, Ohio) made it 349 in 2008, Davis Howell of Christian Academy of Knoxville (Tenn.) raised it to 358 and Sawmiller obliterated the record by raising it 87 catches to 445.
Chapman is also believed to be the first receiver with over 2,000 career yards, gaining 2,241 at Temple. Goldsmith topped that mark with 2,346 yards while McKay upped it to 3,389 yards. Stan Rome of Valdosta (Ga.) increased the total to 4,477 yards, a mark that lasted for 22 years.
Darrell Jackson of Tampa Catholic (Fla.) broke the record in 1995 with 4,594 yards and Booty broke Jackson's record the next year with 5,867 yards. Fifteen years later Dorial Green-Beckham of Hillcrest (Springfield, Mo.) increased the record by nearly 500 yards to 6,356 yards, but Quinn broke Green-Beckham's record in 2013 with 6,566 yards.
Marvin Mims of Lone Star (Frisco, Texas), Julian Fleming of Southern Columbia Area (Catawissa, Pa.) and Jaxon Smith-Nijgba of Rockwall (Texas) all moved into the top 11 career receiving yardage leaders, but still finished over 1,000 yards behind Quinn's record. Meanwhile, Drew Hatfield of Mingo Central (Matawan, W.Va.) moved into the top 10 for career receptions with 343, which is still over 100 catches behind Sawmiller.
What current receiver is most likely to jump into the Top 10 in 2020? Not surprisingly it's Sawmiller's alma mater Kenton that has the likely candidate in Jayden Cornell who has 231 catches for 3,756 yards in three varsity seasons.
