Less than a month after the deadliest wildfire in United States history, the
Lahainaluna (Lahaina, Hawaii) football program has been cleared to play a five-game schedule.
Maui News reported that the Maui Interscholastic League released its fall schedule and the Lunas will begin their 2022 season Sept. 30 at
Baldwin (Wailuku, Hawaii) at War Memorial Stadium in Kahului.
The school sits east of downtown Lahaina, which was decimated by the Aug. 13 blaze. More than 115 people died, thousands were displaced and scores remain unaccounted for as the firestorm leveled the historic town that was once the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
But the "Maui Strong" rallying cry has been a beacon for many. That includes the students of Lahainaluna, who have moved to a campus 45-minute away in Kihei.
"If the kids are in, the parents are in, the coaching staff is ready to go," head coach Dean Rickard told Maui News.
Kamehameha Maui (Pukalani, Hawaii) will play Baldwin on Sept. 1.
The Lunas won four consecutive HHSAA Division II titles from 2016 to 2019.
