Is the best prep player in Ohio the best prep player in America?
You can make a great case. The Buckeye State owns three of the nation’s Top 4 guard prospects in Kierstan Bell (Canton McKinley/Ohio State), Zia Cooke (Toledo Rogers/South Carolina) and Jordan Horston (Africentric/Tennessee). Those three, along with wing Sammie Puisis (Mason/Florida State) and guard Jacy Sheldon (Dublin Coffman/Ohio State) are five-star prospects. Fab Five? We’d take those girls against any other state’s starting five.

How good will Africentric Early College (Columbus) be?
It’s not often a small school is ranked nationally, let a lone in the Top 10, but defending Division III state champion Africentric opens the season ranked No. 8 in the initial MaxPreps Xcellent Top 25. The Lady Nubians return all five starters including Horston who is a unique talent (see below). The other key returners are juniors Alexia Smith, Nyam Thornton and Kazhmere Smith-Hopgood and sophomore Maliyah Johnson. Africentric was seven girls away from moving up to D-II due to competitive balance. The Nubians play No. 9 ranked Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, N.Y.) at Classic in the Country. Can anyone challenge Africentric in D-III? The three teams that top most lists are Versailles, Elyria Catholic and Hiland (Berlin). Versailles, last year’s runner-up, is coming off a D-III state volleyball title. Elyria Catholic returns four starters from last season’s state semifinalist. Hiland? Enough said.

Will Minster Repeat as Ohio’s small school champion?
The Wildcats scored 20 points in the first half of last year’s D-IV state final and then scored more than that in both the third and fourth quarters en route to a 63-48 win over Ottoville. It was Minster’s third state title and first since 2004. Three starters return in seniors Courtney Prenger (Xavier) and Demaris Wolf and sophomore Ivy Wolf. Key sub Janae Hoying (sophomore) also returns. Prenger, Ivy Wolf and Hoying scored 17, 15 and 15 points, respectively, in last year’s state final. Expect the Wildcats (71-11 the last three years) to be pushed by Ottoville, Waterford, Fort Loramie and Cornerstone Christian (Willoughby).

Who can challenge Rogers (Toledo) in D-II?
The task is immensely tall. New Philadelphia, a state semifinalist last season, returns four starters and should contend based on experience and talent. Roger Bacon (Cincinnati) is a preseason darling thanks to the return of all five starters. Others? Several teams – St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron), Bellevue, Sheridan (Thornville), Laurel (Shaker Heights) and Valley View (Germantown) – will take a shot. This is the Rams state title to lose.

Is Ohio’s Big School Division the most wide open of any?
Yep. There is no clear-cut favorite. McKinley (Canton) owns the best player (Bell), while Pickerington Central  (traditional titan) is the defending state champion. Newark? GlenOak (Canton)? Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati)? Mason? Wayne (Huber Heights)? Westerville South? The amount of talent in D-I is remarkable – so is the amount of contenders. Ohio’s big school division is going to be a battle. Good luck…

First Team

* Kierstan Bell, McKinley (Canton), senior, G (Ohio State)
Consensus Top 10 recruit nationally and two-time Ohio Ms. Basketball winner has signed with Ohio State. Scored a Stark County single-season record 885 points as a junior (averaged 33.3 points and 9.6 rebounds). Has 2,104 career points. Three-time first team OPSWA All-Ohio.

* Zia Cooke, Rogers (Toledo), senior, PG (South Carolina)
Consensus Top 10 recruit nationally recently committed to South Carolina. Other finalists were Mississippi State, Louisville, Texas, Tennessee and Ohio State. Averaged 21.7 points, 4.6 rebounds. 5.0 assists and 3.1 steals per game as a junior. Had 33 points and 14 rebounds in D-II state final win over Gilmour. Member of USA U17 National Team.

* Jordan Horston, Africentric Early College (Columbus), senior, G (Tennessee)
Consensus Top 10 recruit nationally has committed to Tennessee. Other finalists were Connecticut and South Carolina. Named MVP of the 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup this past summer after leading the United States to the gold medal. Averaged 18.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 5.1 steals and 1.7 blocks as a junior en route to leading Africentric to the D-III state title.

* Sammie Puisis, Mason, senior, W (Florida State)
Five-star prospect and Florida State recruit averaged 16.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 1.4 assists last season. Two-time Greater Miami Conference Player of the Year.

* Jacy Sheldon, Dublin Coffman, senior, G (Ohio State)
Five-star prospect is a top 50 recruit nationally is headed to Ohio State. Averaged 26.1 points last season en route to first team OPSWA D-I All-Ohio.

* Madison Greene, Pickerington Central, senior, PG (Penn State)
Considered a Top 15 player nationally at her position, Penn State recruit was first team OPSWA D-I All-Ohio last year. Reigning OCC-Ohio Division Player of the Year averaged 11.8 points, 3.2 assists and 2.8 rebounds en route to leading the Tigers to the big school state title.

* Gabbie Marshall, Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati), senior, PG (Iowa)
Iowa recruit is a two-time OPSWA D-I All-Ohio selection. Three-time First Team Girls Greater Catholic League selection. Averaged 16.3 points as a junior, 13.9 as a sophomore and 11.4 as a freshman.

* Katie Shumate, Newark, senior, G (Kent State)
Kent State recruit is considered a Top 30 prospect nationally at her position. OPSWA D-I All-Ohio last season after averaging 13.8 points. 

Second Team

* Madelyn Westbeld, Fairmont (Kettering), junior, F
Undecided recruit considered one of the country’s top 10 forward prospects in junior class. Led the Greater Western Ohio Conference in rebounds (11.1) and blocks (2.6) per game last season. Averaged 11.3 points.

* Courtney Prenger, Minster, senior, F (Xavier)
Xavier recruit is a three-time First Team All-Midwest Athletic Conference selection. OPSWA D-IV All-Ohio last year after averaging 11.8 points for the state champions. Averaged 10.4 points and 6.6 rebounds as a freshman. Led the MAC in blocks (75) as a sophomore.

* Dayshanette Harris, Ursuline (Youngstown), senior, PG (Pitt)
Pitt recruit is a three-time OPSWA All-Ohio selection. Choose the Panthers over Youngstown State, Iowa, Marquette, and Ohio. Averaged 26 points as a junior.

* Mikala Morris, Kenton Ridge (Springfield), senior, P (Quinnipiac)
Quinnipiac recruit is considered a Top 20 prospect nationally at her position. Three-time First Team Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail Division selection. Averaged 22.5 points, 19.8 rebounds, five blocks, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals as a junior.  Averaged 18.9 points and 16.5 rebounds as a sophomore and 15.7 and 15.1, respectively, as a freshman.

* Anyssa Jones, Westerville South, junior, G (Ohio State)
Became Ohio State’s first commit in the Class of 2020. Also holds offers from Florida State, Purdue, Miami (Fla.), Michigan State and Maryland. Averaged 13.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.5 steals as a sophomore.

* Gabby Hutcherson, Westerville South, junior, F (Ohio State)
Has committed to Ohio State. Also holds offers from Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, Florida, Louisville, Florida State, Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan, Maryland, Miami (Fla.) and Michigan State. Averaged 10.5 points as a freshman at Westerville North. After sitting out first half of last season due to transfer bylaws, averaged 12.1 points, 6.5 rebounds for South.

* Maliya Perry, Pickerington Central, senior, F (Auburn)
Auburn recruit was OPSWA D-I All-Ohio last year. Averaged a team-best 12.6 points and 6.3 rebounds for the D-I state champions.

* Destiny Leo, North (Eastlake), junior, F
Two-time OPSWA All-Ohio selection averaged 19.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.1 blocks per game last season. Averaged 13.2 points as a freshman.

Third Team

* Kaydan Lawson, Orange (Pepper Pike), junior, PG
A top 20 prospect nationally at her position. Averaged 18 points last season en route to earning OPSWA D-II All-Ohio honors.

* Taiyier Parks, North Royalton, senior, F (Michigan State)
A Top 100 recruit nationally. Has committed to Michigan State. Also considered Ohio Sate, Kentucky, Rutgers and Cincinnati.

* Mya Jackson, Wilmington, senior, G (Seton Hall)
Seton Hall recruit is her program’s all-time leading scorer. Second team OPSWA D-I All-Ohio last season after averaging 22.4 points. 

* Rachel Murray, Waynesville, senior, G
Program’s all-time leading scorer is also a three-time Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division Player of the Year and three-time District 15 Underclassmen of the Year award winner. Three-time OPSWA D-III All-Ohio selection as well. Has 1,296 career points. Undecided but holds D-II offers from West Liberty (W.V.), Charleston (W.V.), Lake Erie, Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) and Florida Tech.

* Macy Spielman, Upper Arlington (Columbus), senior, G (Bowling Green)
 Bowling Green recruit surpassed 1,000-career points as a junior. Averaged 17.9 points en route to OPSWA D-I All-Ohio honors.

* Bree Hall, Wayne (Huber Heights), sophomore, G
A Top 20 prospect nationally and Top 5 at her position. Averaged 10.3 points, five rebounds, 1.6 steals, 0.8 assists and 0.7 blocks as a freshman.

* Macyn Siegenthaler, Wooster, junior, G
Named OPSWA D-I All-Ohio after averaging 21 points as a sophomore. Scored school record 44 points in a win over Ashland.

* Nevaeh Dean, Lakota West (West Chester), junior, F (Virginia Tech)
Virginia Tech recruit considered a Top 15 prospect nationally at her position. First team GMC selection averaged 7.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals.
