St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, N.J.) came into Saturday's contest ranked No. 22 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings, but was stunned by
Paramus Catholic (Paramus, N.J.), 44-35. Paramus Catholic was ranked No. 144 nationally and No. 4 in the Freeman Rankings for New Jersey coming into the week.
The Paladins led 35-14 at halftime, but the Green Knights recaptured the lead on a field goal by
Matt Gobolek with less than a minute remaining in the fourth.
Paramus Catholic saw its 21-point halftime lead fall to seven entering the fourth.
PC's most effective player was
Jabrill Peppers. The junior ran for four touchdowns. A member of the Class of 2014 Top 100 Watch List, Peppers has now scored 13 touchdowns on the season.
St. Joseph Regional's
Sherman Alston played well. The junior running back ran for three touchdowns. He has now scored five touchdowns on the season.
SJR came in allowing just 15.0 points per game this season. The Montvale school struggled against the Paramus school's offense, which entered the game scoring 35.0 points per game.
The victory is a complete turnaround from last season's game between these two teams, which the Green Knights took, 34-0.
The victory was a step in the right direction for the Paladins, which was coming off a 31-8 defeat at the hands of Don Bosco Prep in its previous game. The defeat comes as a step back for St. Joseph Regional, which notched a 21-10 victory over St. Peter's Prep in its previous outing.
In a non-conference game next week Paramus Catholic (5-1) takes on Friendship Collegiate Academy, and St. Joseph Regional (4-2) will go up against DePaul in a Big North - United game.
