This was the last game and play coached by King's Dale Harvel, who died Friday of an apparent heart attack.
The high school coaching fraternity has lost one of its most devoted while he was on the job.
Dale Harvel, described as a "legend" by the
Detroit News, died of an apparent heart attack Friday while overseeing
King (Detroit, Mich.) in a 7-on-7 game. He was 57.
According to the newspaper, Harvel collapsed during the game and was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he passed. He was about to begin his 31st season as a coach at King and eighth as head coach.
Last season, King went 14-0 and won a state Division 2 state crown. He was known as much for his work off the field for his players as on it.
"He is leaving a legacy," Detroit Public School League executive director Alvin Ward Sr. told the newspaper. "He has touched a lot of lives, sent a lot of kids to college and sent some of them to the pros. … He was just a good person. He is definitely going to be missed."
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio tweeted out condolences and tributes to Harvel.
Recent King graduate and Michigan State freshman receiver Donnie Corley tweeted: "RIP to one of the best high school coaches out there. We (gonna) keep balling for you."
Corley made a last-second Hail Mary touchdown catch for the state championship last season, a 40-38 win over Lowell. That was the last game Harvel coached and it will go down as one of the greatest comeback wins in state history. King trailed 31-13 in the second half and its 97-yard game-winning drive took 38 seconds.
