2016 MaxPreps California Medium Schools All-State Softball Team

MaxPreps is honored to name the best high school softball players from the 2016 season. This second installment honors players from medium schools. The MaxPreps Medium School All-State Team consists primarily of players from schools wit enrollments of 1,000-2,000 students.

Medium Schools Player of the Year: Melanie Olmos, Grand Terrace, Senior

The Oklahoma signee closed her prep career with a 17-1 record and 0.22 ERA and helped Grand Terrace win the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 title.

Olmos was a first team MaxPreps all-American and also earned medium schools all-American honors. She was a finalist for MaxPreps' National Player of the Year honor and was named the Riverside Press-Enterprise and the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin's All-Sun Player of the Year.

In 95 innings, Olmos allowed only 27 hits and three earned runs. She also carried a big bat – driving in 21 runs and hitting .380. Grand Terrace finished 2016 ranked No. 2 Nationally.

Medium Schools Team of the Year: Grand Terrace

Grand Terrace finished ranked No. 2 nationally in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Softball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. The only loss was 1-0 to Great Oak (Temecula). The Titans followed that loss by winning their final 26 games and the CIF-SS D3 title.

Led by Olmos, the team allowed just 21 runs in going 28-1 in 2016. The Titans recorded 18 shutouts and allowed a single run in five other games during the season.

In addition to Olmos, Marissa Jauregui signed to play at UC Davis, Danielle Rico signed with Eastern Michigan and Jocelyn Betancourt will play at Cal State Bakersfield.

As a team, the Titans batted .416, averaged nine runs per game and 10 different players homered. A dozen players had 10 or more base hits and 10 drove in a dozen or more runs. The Titans were so loaded that part-time player Alexis Lemus, a sophomore, batted only 29 times, but collected 20 base hits (.690 batting average), scored 11 runs and drove in 16.

Medium Schools Coach of the Year: Bobby Flores, Grand Terrace

In the last four seasons, Grand Terrace has won 95 games and lost 19, but the dominance of the 2016 and its 28-1 mark was the best season for Flores. The Titans lost just one game (it was a 1-0 decision) and finished the season with a 26-game winning streak and a No. 2 National ranking in the Xcellent 25.

During the championship playoff run, Grand Terrace outscored its five foes 37-2, winning four times by shutout.

The Titans has everything – fielding, hitting and pitching. And let's not forget depth (Flores will have 14 players returning next season, including all-staters Yescenia Morrison, Eliyah Flores, Lilly Bishop and Alisha Flores).

The future looks bright for the Titans, as they have four big-time commits: Eliyah Flores (Oklahoma), Morgan Parsons (Hawaii), Alyssa Martinez (Mississippi) and Lilly Bishop (North Carolina State). Sophomore Alyssa Graham will perhaps sign in two years with San Jose State and freshman Alycia Flores is deciding among offers from Arizona, Arizona State and Oklahoma.

P - Nerissa Eason, Bear River (Grass Valley), Senior
Eason led the Bruins to a 29-4 record and a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section D-4 championship game. She finished 22-1 with a 0.55 ERA and 256 strikeouts in 164 innings. The Oregon State signee also had 51 RBIs, 13 doubles and nine home runs.

P - Alyssa Loza, North (Torrance), Senior
The Arizona State-bound Loza won her second-consecutive CIF-SS D-4 title. She finished with a 20-2-1 record, a 1.06 ERA and 209 strikeouts.

P - Jessica Seely, Foothill (Palo Cedro), Junior
Seely was a Northern Section pitching triple crown winner: wins (24), strikeouts (242) and ERA (0.31). She only allowed seven earned runs in 157 innings. The Sacramento State commit also hit .510 (50 hits) with eight home runs, 10 doubles, 42 RBIs and 44 runs.

P - Marissa Moreno, Torrance, Senior
The San Diego State commit recorded 23 wins with a 1.01 ERA and 252 strikeouts. She also drove in 20 runs. The Pioneer League MVP was named the Torrance Daily Breeze POY.

P - Yesenia Morrison, Grand Terrace, Junior
Morrison went 11-0 with a 0.52 ERA and nine saves, striking out 102 in 81 innings while only allowing 22 hits and seven runs (six earned). Grand Terrace won the CIF-SS D-3 title, lost only once and finished No. 2 nationally.

P - Mariah Mazon, Mission Oak (Tulare), Junior
Mazon led Mission Oak to a second-straight Central Section D-4 title when she went 22-3 (tied for the most wins in the section) with a 0.60 ERA and 242 strikeouts in 164 innings. Committed to Oregon State, she pitched seven shutouts and hit .486 with five doubles, three triples, nine home runs, 28 RBIs, 35 runs and eight steals.

P - Callie Nunes, Ceres, Junior
Nicole Bates and Mahlena O'Neal got most of the headlines, but Nunes won 20 games and had a 1.14 ERA to go along with 239 strikeouts in 135 innings as the Bulldogs won the Sac-Joaquin Section D-3 title. She has committed to Concordia University.

P - Alexis Scalzo, Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland), Senior
Scalzo was 17-4 with a 1.37 ERA and batted .388 as the Dragons finished 22-4 and won the North Coast Section D-3 title.

P - Kasey Cazares, Calexico, Senior
Opponents batted just .125 against Cazares, who finished 13-4 with a 0.31 ERA and 191 strikeouts in 113 innings. Cazares missed three weeks of the season, but returned in time to record 24 strikeouts in a pair of playoff victories. She also batted .370 for the Bulldogs.

P - Devyn Magnett, Cathedral Catholic (San Diego), Senior
Magnett started 20 games and recorded 13 shutouts en route to a 15-3 record with a 0.45 ERA. She has signed with Long Beach State.

C - Mahlena O'Neal, Ceres, Senior
The Georgia-bound O'Neal drove in 43 runs on 46 hits and batted .479 to lead Ceres to the SJS D-4 title. She homered nine times and hit a dozen doubles.

C - Haley Mitchell, Temple City, Senior
Mitchell batted .446 with seven home runs and 34 RBIs, helping Temple City win 12 games. Mitchell was named the Star-News Player of the Year and has signed with Eastern Illinois.

C - Maddi Hackbarth, Oakdale, Senior
Hackbarth hit a dozen homers and drove in 41 runs while batting .512 as Oakdale went 22-3. She has signed with Fresno State.

C - Lilly Bishop, Grand Terrace, Junior
Bishop transferred to Grand Terrace from Arlington and made an immediate impact, as she led the team with a .512 batting average and 35 RBIs. Grand Terrace lost just once, won the Southern Section D-3 title and finished No. 2 nationally.

IF - Eliyah Flores, Grand Terrace, Junior
An All-CIFSS D-3 selection, Flores batted .451, tying for the team lead with eight home runs and 41 runs. The Oklahoma commit drove in 27 runs.

IF - Lauren Quirke, Hillsdale (San Mateo), Senior
The Peninsula Athletic League Bay MVP batted .488 with eight doubles, four triples and two home runs. She had an on-base percentage of .560 and a .750 slugging percentage.

IF - Nicole Bates, Ceres, Senior
Bates batted .571 with five homers, four triples, nine doubles, 33 RBIs, 45 runs and 14 stolen bases. She collected 60 hits and committed just one error at shortstop as the Bulldogs won the SJS D-4 title. She has signed with Washington.

IF - Briana Perez, Alhambra (Martinez), Junior
The UCLA commit hit .613, drove in 40 runs, belted 18 extra-base hits, had 21 stolen bases, 46 hits and scored 56 runs as Alhambra captured the North Coast Section D-2 title.

IF - Emma Bordenkecher, Temescal Canyon (Lake Elsinore), Senior
Bordenkecher led Temescal Canyon in hitting with a .641 average, plus 35 runs and 41 RBIs. She also had 22 walks to give her a .736 on-base percentage. Chosen the Most Valuable Player of the Sunbelt League, she has signed with Idaho State.

IF - Karlee Sparacino, Alhambra (Martinez), Junior
Sparacino hit .620 with seven homers and 57 RBIs and teamed with Perez as Alhambra claimed the NCS D-2 title. She has committed to Oregon.

IF - Maricela Matos, Newark Memorial (Newark), Senior
Matos was big in helping Newark Memorial win 22 times and reach the NCS D-2 title game, as she batted .545 with 30 runs and 21 RBIs. She has signed with San Jose State.

IF - Gracie Sotomayor, Chavez (Delano), Senior
Sotomayor battled .680 (51-for-75) with 11 doubles, 51 hits, 49 runs and 50 stolen bases. She has signed with Academy of the Arts.

IF - Mia Camuso, Shasta (Redding), Senior
The Oregon signee won the Northern Section triple crown, leading in home runs (14), RBIs (50) and slugging percentage (1.255). She was also second in runs (49) and sixth in average (.574). She ended her career with five all-time section records.

IF - Alyssa Diaz, South El Monte, Senior
The UC Santa Barbara signee was named the Mission Valley League MVP after hitting .643 with six home runs, eight doubles, six triples, 32 runs and 32 RBIs.

IF - Isabel Rocco, Jurupa Hills (Fontana), Freshman
Rocco led Jurupa Hills with a .586 average, as well as belting 13 home runs (including two grand slams) and had 26 total extra-base hits. She had 56 RBIs and 42 runs scored and ended the season with a 15-game hitting streak (including 14 multi-hit games) during which she batted .672 with 41 RBIs.

IF - Michelle Castro, East Union (Manteca), Senior
Castro drove in 25 runs and batted .565. She had 21 extra-base hits and stole 16 bases in 24 games as East Union was 23-3. She has signed with William Penn.

IF - Callee Heen, San Benito (Hollister), Senior
Heen put up big numbers as San Benito reached the Central Coast Section finals: .609 batting average, .657 on-base percentage, 56 hits, 48 RBIs and 44 runs. The Hawaii signee had 20 multi-hit games.

OF - Sammy Fabian, Glendale, Sophomore
Though her hitting streak came to an end at 61 games, the UC Santa Barbara commit hit .656 (42-for-64) with 40 runs, 22 RBIs, 10 doubles, four triples, three homers and 18 stolen bases. OF - Livy Schiele, Bishop's (La Jolla), Junior
Committed to Auburn, Schiele batted .611 and scored 59 times in 29 games. She drove in 21 runs and had a base hit in each game. She also had 27 extra-base hits and stole 35 bases. She has a 36-game hitting streak.

OF - Cherise Silvan, Vista del Lago (Folsom), Senior
Silvan batted .610, stole 16 bases and scored 27 runs in a deep playoff run for VDL. She had a base hit in all but one game and has signed with Seattle University.

OF - Kindra Hackbarth, Oakdale, Senior
Among the state's batting leaders with a .667 average (58-for-98), Hackbarth scored 40 times and had 25 extra-base hits, one more than her all-state twin, Madi. She has signed with Fresno State.

OF - Julie Davis, Homestead (Cupertino), Junior
The SCVAL De Anza MVP batted .574 with 54 hits and 37 runs scored. She hit four doubles, six triples and stole 30 bases.

OF - Alyssa Barrera, Bishop Amat (La Puente), Senior
The University of Utah signee was the Del Rey League MVP after she batted .474 with 12 stolen bases and 28 runs scored. She also had 15 doubles, five triples and three home runs.

Util - Megan Faraimo, Cathedral Catholic (San Diego), Sophomore
Faraimo shared time with Magnett and went 10-2 with 152 strikeouts in 93 innings. She posted a 0.22 ERA, recorded six shutouts and allowed just 34 hits. She also batted .433 with nine homers, nine doubles and 28 RBIs. Faraimo has verbally committed to UCLA.
