The Cottonwood Colts will head out on the road to square off against the Park City Miners at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Cottonwood is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.
On Saturday, Cottonwood came up short against Viewmont and fell 5-2.
Cottonwood got a good showing from Quinn Mendenhall, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Mendenhall has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Diego Martinez made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That home run was his first of the season.
Meanwhile, Park City came tearing into Saturday's matchup with seven straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against the Buffaloes by a score of 10-6. That's two games straight that the Miners have won by exactly four runs.
Wesley Dewitt was a standout: he scored two runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Jack Gallagher, who scored a run while going 2-for-2.
Park City was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .429. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .364 or higher in three consecutive games.
Park City's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-3. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Cottonwood, their loss dropped their record down to 9-3.
Tuesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Cottonwood hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .346. However, it's not like Park City struggles in that department as they've averaged .349. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Cottonwood might still be hurting after the 13-3 defeat they got from Park City in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Colts avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
