The Purnell Swett Rams will challenge the South View Tigers at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Purnell Swett is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50.7 points per game this season.
Last Friday, Purnell Swett had to suffer through an 80-48 loss at the hands of Lumberton. While losing is never fun, the Rams can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 516th, while the Pirates are ranked 120th).
Despite the loss, Purnell Swett had strong showings from Jeremiah Barnes, who went 6-for-12 on his way to 18 points, and Collin Sampson, who posted 15 points. Charles Wilkes was another key player, putting up five points.
Meanwhile, South View was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Friday as they fell 58-54 to Jack Britt.
Purnell Swett will have to contain Antrell Gilmore as he made an impact in South View's last game. He went 7-for-13 en route to 21 points along with six assists and five rebounds. The match was Gilmore's third in a row with at least 17 points. Another player making a difference was Demarcus Spearman, who put up 12 points and five boards.
Even though they lost, South View smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in six consecutive contests.
South View's defeat dropped their record down to 15-9. As for Purnell Swett, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost 14 of their last 17 games, which has put a noticeable dent in their 5-18 record this season.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Purnell Swett has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 26.8 rebounds per game. However, it's not like South View struggles in that department as they've been averaging 33.7 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Purnell Swett suffered a grim 69-47 defeat to South View in their previous matchup two weeks ago. Can Purnell Swett avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
