Nationally-ranked teams began crossing the finish line last week with
Stoneman Douglas (Parkland) breaking a record in Florida for consecutive state championships.
Ranked No. 4 in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school baseball rankings, Stoneman Douglas edged
Jupiter 3-2 to claim its fifth-straight Class 7A state championship. That breaks the state record of four in a row the Eagles held along with
Archbishop McCarthy (Fort Lauderdale), which won its titles between 2010 and 2013.
The Eagles were one of eight teams in the rankings this week to claim a state championship.
St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) defeated
Buchholz (Gainesville) for the Class 6A state title in Florida while
Sam Houston (Lake Charles), a newcomer to the rankings this week, won the Non-Select Division 1 championship in Louisiana.
Defending national champion
Catholic (Baton Rouge, La.) won its second-straight Select Division 1 state championship while
Lutheran South Academy (Houston, Texas) won the TAPPS Division 2 state title.
Others newcomers to the rankings this week who won state championships include
Teurlings Catholic (Lafayette, La.),
Basic (Henderson, Nev.) and
Magnolia Heights (Senatobia, Miss.).
Game of the week: Puyallup (Wash.) def.
Sumner (Wash.), 7-6. Sumner had the chance to pull off an upset in the district playoffs as it had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the seventh trailing 7-6. However, a groundout to
Madden Pike at second base ended the threat and gave the Vikings the win and the No. 1 seed for the state tournament.
Game to watch: Walton (Marietta) vs.
Lowndes (Valdosta), Georgia AAAAAA championship series. Lowndes returns as the defending state champion but the Vikings have 11 losses on their resume this spring. That didn't matter against previous No. 7 Etowah as Lowndes won two straight to advance to the final against Walton.
Pitcher of the week: Gio Rojas of Stoneman Douglas got the Eagles into the state finals with a 5-0 win over Alonso. Rojas struck out 15 in a one-hit shutout. Alonso had knocked off previous No. 2 Venice in the quarterfinals.
Hitter of the week: Nico Sabatino,
St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Bombed a home run and a double in the Raiders' 15-0 semifinal win.
Streaks:
Hempfield (Landisville, Pa.) raised its winning streak to 29 in a row with a win Monday over Manheim Townhip.
Service (Anchorage, Alaska) had its unbeaten streak of 36 games in a row (35-0-1) come to an end with a 3-2 loss to South Anchorage on May 13.
