Pharr-San Juan-Alamo picked up another tournament win on Friday. They came out on top against San Benito by a score of 4-1.
Arieanna Hernandez made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She tossed five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Hernandez was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one triple and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Arianna Lugo, who went a perfect2-for-2 with one home run and three RBI.
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in seven consecutive matchups dating back to last season.
Meanwhile, Veterans Memorial posted their closest win since February 16, 2024 on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Rio Hondo 4-2.
Like Pharr-San Juan-Alamo, Veterans Memorial also got a great game from a two-way player: Camila Olvera. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over four innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts Olvera has posted since back in April of 2024. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple marked the first that she's hit this season.
In other batting news, Mia Gonzalez and Gia Perez did most of the damage at the plate: Gonzalez scored a run while going 1-for-1, while Perez went a perfect1-for-1 with one triple and one run. Vivica Cruz also deserves some recognition as she hit her first hit of the season.
Veterans Memorial now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Pharr-San Juan-Alamo, their record now sits at 3-0.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. Pharr-San Juan-Alamo has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.7 hits per game. However, it's not like Veterans Memorial struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 3.4 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo couldn't quite finish off Veterans Memorial when the teams last played back in February of 2022 and fell 4-2. Can Pharr-San Juan-Alamo avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
