Gabe Smith made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting no hits from his two at bats. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in RBI (four).
In other batting news, Troy DeVoe was a standout: he scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Coastal HomeSchool's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-6 when he doesn't). J.W. Castongia was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.
Coastal HomeSchool hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Beaufort Academy was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They came up short against Patrick Henry Academy, falling 7-1. Having soared to a lofty 11 runs in the game before, the Eagles couldn't push the score so high this time.
Beaufort Academy's loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Coastal HomeSchool, they now have a winning record of 7-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Coastal HomeSchool has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Beaufort Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Coastal HomeSchool took their victory against Beaufort Academy in their previous matchup two weeks ago by a conclusive 11-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for Coastal HomeSchool since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
