Even though the Rustburg Red Devils have not done well against the Amherst County Lancers recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Rustburg secured a 40-35 W over Amherst County. That's two games straight that Rustburg has won by exactly five points.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Rustburg to victory, but perhaps none more so than Olivia Tyree, who scored 12 points. Another player making a difference was Haven Grinstead, who scored nine points.
Despite the loss, Amherst County saw an underclassman step up: Emmena Awanda scored 11 points along with three steals. Awanda hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Cheyenne Wall, who scored six points along with five rebounds and three steals.
The win makes it two in a row for Rustburg and bumps their season record up to 11-9. As for Amherst County, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-13.
Rustburg will head out on the road to challenge Liberty at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Rustburg is coming into the game with four straight victories on the road, meaning Liberty will have to defend against a team hungry for a win. As for Amherst County, they and Jefferson Forest will face off at 7:00 p.m. on February 9th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday.
