The Cordova Lancers will head out to take on the Rosemont Wolverines at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Cordova's hitters haven't had much luck over their past three contests, but Tuesday's match will give them a chance to turn things around.
Cordova took a ten-run loss the last time they faced off against Rio Americano, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Cordova had just enough and edged out Rio Americano 2-1 on Saturday. The victory was some much needed relief for the Lancers as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Levi Nyberg spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on two hits and racked up ten Ks.
On the hitting side, Cordova saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Bro Ahlstrom, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. That run marked the first that Ahlstrom scored this season.
Meanwhile, while Rosemont put up plenty of runs on Saturday, the same can't be said for West Campus. Rosemont blew past West Campus 11-0. The result was nothing new for the Wolverines, who have now won three games by ten runs or more so far this season.
Jack Blankenship looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Kylan English and Gavin Terry did most of the damage at the plate: English scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances, while Terry scored three runs and stole three bases while going 3-for-4. Terry has become a key player for Rosemont: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 1-2 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Shawn Bell, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Rosemont kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as West Campus only managed two hits.
Cordova's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-3-1. As for Rosemont, their record is now 4-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Cordova has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Rosemont struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Cordova couldn't quite finish off Rosemont in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 and fell 3-1. Can Cordova avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
