North Star hasn't had much luck against Shade recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Cougars will look to defend their home field against the Panthers at 4:30 p.m. North Star is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
North Star is headed into Thursday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Wednesday. They fell 4-1 to Windber.
North Star saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kayley Brant, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, Shade came tearing into Monday's matchup with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against the Rockets by a score of 9-4.
Payton Maddy was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and one triple.
In other batting news, Patty Kovacs was incredible, going 1-for-4 with one home run and four RBI. Another player making a difference was Jaedyn Krupper, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs.
Shade's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-2. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for North Star, their loss dropped their record down to 4-4.
North Star's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's contest. The Cougars have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.2 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Shade, though, as they've been averaging only 1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will North Star continue to outrun the ball?
North Star might still be hurting after the 19-0 defeat they got from Shade in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
