The Southside Cardinals will take on the Poth Pirates at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. Poth took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Southside, who comes in off a win.
Southside took a 11-run loss the last time they faced off against McCollum, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Southside had just enough and edged out McCollum 10-8. That's two games straight that the Cardinals have won by exactly two runs.
Achillies Sepulveda made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Sepulveda was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Southside let Jeremy Huizar and Eddie Villazana run wild. Huizar scored a run while going 2-for-3, while Villazana scored a run while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabriel Martinez, who scored two runs while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
Southside hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as McCollum struck out ten times.
Meanwhile, Poth scored first but ultimately less than Lytle in their contest on Tuesday. They fell just short of Lytle by a score of 6-5.
Oliver Gray was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Caiden Gorzell, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
Poth dropped their record down to 1-1 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only 1.25 runs. As for Southside, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to a perfect 2-0.
Southside came up short against Poth when the teams last played back in February of 2024, falling 7-4. Can Southside avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
