Hartford and Homestead are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Orioles will face off against the Highlanders at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. Hartford is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Hartford proved they can win big on Saturday (they won by 17) and on Saturday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Indian Trail, sneaking past 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Orioles have posted since May 22, 2024.
Ayden Grulke tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over 4.2 innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Joe Landgraf was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.
Meanwhile, Homestead was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They came up short against West Bend East, falling 9-3.
Homestead also got a good showing from Lucas Wirth, who didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. What's more, Wirth gave up only two walks, the fewest he's had since back in May of 2024.
On the hitting side, Homestead saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ari Crabbe, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Jack Adams also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
Hartford is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 4-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for Homestead, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-5.
Hartford beat Homestead 4-1 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Will the Orioles repeat their success, or do the Highlanders have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
