The Monroe Golden Tornadoes were the 59-48 winner over the Dougherty Trojans when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. Monroe took a 59-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Trojans on Friday. Monroe has been going strong on the season, but this is now their second loss in a row.
When it comes to explaining why Monroe lost, one person who can't be blamed is Justin Burns. Despite the final result, he scored 24 points along with three blocks and two steals. Burns has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last 12 times he's played. James Adams was another key contributor, scoring nine points.
Dougherty's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jaion Burns, who scored 20 points along with three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Burns has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Traevon Williams, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten rebounds.
Monroe's defeat dropped their record down to 17-5. As for Dougherty, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 16-7 record this season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Monroe will take on the Tigers at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Carver knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past 19 games -- so hopefully the Golden Tornadoes like a good challenge. As for Dougherty, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against the Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. Thomasville is no doubt hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses.
