East Providence and Coventry are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2016, but likely not for long. The Townies will head out on the road to take on the Oakers at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. East Providence will be strutting in after a win while Coventry will be coming in after a loss.
East Providence is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: Moses Brown, who was ranked 20th at the time (East Providence was ranked 14th). The Townies came out on top in a nail-biter against the Quakers on Tuesday, sneaking past 9-7. With that victory, the Townies brought their scoring average up to 6.1 runs per game.
The team relied heavily on Audrey Bernard, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Caroline Welch was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Tuesday just wasn't the day for Coventry's offense. They took a 4-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of St. Raphael Academy on Tuesday. Having soared to a lofty 12 runs in the game before, the Oakers' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
Sage SoareS spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on five hits.
On the hitting side, Coventry saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Emily Spadoni, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one double.
With the defeat, Coventry broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 11-6. As for East Providence, their win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 8-9.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. East Providence hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.5 home runs per game. However, it's not like Coventry struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
East Providence suffered a grim 15-8 defeat to Coventry in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Townies avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
