The Mercy McAuley Wolves will square off against the St. Ursula Academy Bulldogs at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Mercy McAuley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
Last Friday, Mercy McAuley sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 10-9 victory over Princeton. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Wolves.
Maddie Sucietto was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI. That home run was her first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Olivia Olding, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Meanwhile, St. Ursula Academy had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it five on Friday. They came out on top against the Saints by a score of 7-3.
O Basil spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, V Oberkorn and A Cosgray did most of the damage at the plate: Oberkorn scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4, while Cosgray scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances. Oberkorn has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. A Bunner was another key player, scoring a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
St. Ursula Academy pushed their record up to 8-1 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.7 runs over those games. As for Mercy McAuley, the win got them back to even at 6-6.
Both Mercy McAuley and St. Ursula Academy just can't seem to miss. The Wolves have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.8 hits per game. However, it's not like St. Ursula Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 2.7 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Mercy McAuley couldn't quite get it done against St. Ursula Academy in their previous meeting back in April of 2023 as they fell 7-2. Can the Wolves avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
