The Pueblo South Colts will head out to take on the Skyline Falcons at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Pueblo South will be looking to extend their current six-game winning streak.
While Pueblo South didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 victory over Sand Creek on Saturday. The two-run effort marked the Colts' lowest-scoring matchup of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
Aiden Abeyta spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on two hits and racked up seven Ks.
On the hitting side, Caeden Herrera was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double.
Pueblo South was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .391. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .364 or higher in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Saturday just wasn't the day for Skyline's offense. They came up short against Pueblo South last Saturday, falling 10-0. The Falcons have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Matt Lanier was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off seven hits. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one double.
Pueblo South pushed their record up to 7-2 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Skyline, they now have a losing record of 2-3.
Skyline's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Pueblo South has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .486. It's a different story for Skyline, though, as they've only averaged .331. Will they be able to contain Pueblo South's hitters?
Everything went Pueblo South's way against Skyline in their previous matchup last Saturday, as Pueblo South made off with a 10-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Pueblo South since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
