Kelseyville is 9-1 against Clear Lake since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Knights will head out on the road to challenge the Cardinals at 4:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Clear Lake will face off against a team with plenty of momentum: Kelseyville extended their winning streak to four on Friday. The Knights were the clear victors by an 11-2 margin over Upper Lake.
Brayton Thomas was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kyle Watkins, who went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Reme Strong, who went 1-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Clear Lake made easy work of Cloverdale on Friday and carried off a 9-2 victory. The win continues a trend for the Cardinals in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now won five in a row.
Like Kelseyville, Clear Lake also got a great game from a two-way player: Sawyer Smith. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Smith was also big at the plate, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Jesse Hayes was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three RBI, one stolen base, and one double. Ty Bingham also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Clear Lake always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .524. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cloverdale only posted an OBP of .259.
Kelseyville's victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-3. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Clear Lake, their record now sits at 12-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Kelseyville has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Clear Lake struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Kelseyville was able to grind out a solid victory over Clear Lake in their previous meeting back in April, winning 7-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Knights since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
