Baseball Recap: Yuma Catholic Wins Going Away Against Tonopah Valley

Yuma Catholic won the last time they faced Tonopah Valley and things went their way on Thursday too. Yuma Catholic was the clear victor by an 11-1 margin over Tonopah Valley. Considering the Shamrocks have won ten games by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Leonel Avelar made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Joey Carey and Erik Topete did most of the damage at the plate: Carey went 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Topete scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Ivan Guzman, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.

Yuma Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .581. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Tonopah Valley only posted an OBP of .350.

The victory made it two in a row for Yuma Catholic and bumps their season record up to 13-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.0 runs over those games. As for Tonopah Valley, the defeat snapped their winning streak at six games and leaves them with a 8-5-1 record.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Yuma Catholic will take on River Valley at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. Yuma Catholic is on a six-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), River Valley a three-game streak of away wins, meaning someone's leaving a streak behind. As for Tonopah Valley, they will challenge Highland Prep at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. Tonopah Valley is facing Highland Prep at the right time seeing as Highland Prep is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
