Tim Miller, the 2021-22 MaxPreps National Coach of the Year at
Hazel Green (Ala.), has retired from the girls basketball program and is taking the athletic director job at
St. John Paul II (Huntsville, Ala.), according to multiple media reports.
Miller is the most successful basketball coach in Alabama High School Athletic Association history with 779 wins and 11 state titles (one at
Jeff Davis three at
Bob Jones and seven at Hazel Green).
Under Miller's guidance, Hazel Green reached 20 AHSAA final fours in 26 seasons.

"It's time for a new challenge," Miller told
AL.com. "It's the right time and this opportunity came along and I just couldn't turn it down. I've had a heckuva run here and a heckuva career. It's time to try something else."
Miller led the Trojans to state titles in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. In 2022, when he was named MaxPreps National Coach of the Year, Hazel Green went 35-0 and finished No. 13 in the final rankings.
A three-sport standout athlete in high school, Miller started coaching as an undergraduate at the University of Alabama and. His first assignment was coaching middle school and his first game was a 54-2 loss.
St. John Paul II hopes Miller's winning touch will extend to its teams. The football program was 1-9 last season while the basketball team went 1-26 and the girls program was 12-13.
