Video: Top 25 Texas high school football rankings
See highlights of Mansfield Summit's 27-26 upset win over previous No. 12 DeSoto. After a Week 1 stumble and Week 3 scare, North Shore (Houston) is once again looking like the team that stormed to the Class 6A-D1 state title a year ago.
The Mustangs and coach Jon Kay, No. 3 in the MaxPreps Texas Top 25, improved to 7-1 with a 54-25 road victory over previously undefeated West Brook (Beaumont), a Class 6A-D2 state finalist a year ago. North Shore ran 39 plays, 17 fewer than its opponent, to reach 54 points.
Quarterback Dematrius Davis Jr. ran for two scores and threw for another. Senior running back Zach Evans needed six carries to finish with 180 yards and two touchdowns. The special teams chipped in with Marcus Cockrell's 64-yard punt return for a score and Adrian Martinez's 80-yard return of a block extra-point kick.
West Brook came into the game ranked No. 25 in the state.
After a 16-0 title run a year ago, North Shore lost to No. 2 Katy in its opener 24-21 and survived No. 11 Westfield (Houston) by the same score two weeks later. It has been smooth sailing since.
Another Top 25 team fell from the unbeaten ranks in Week 8 when Mansfield Summit (Arlington) pulled off a late comeback in the rain to defeat DeSoto 27-26. The Eagles dropped 12 this week to No. 24. It leaves 13 unbeaten teams in this week's ranking.
Tompkins (Katy) is the newest ranking addition this week at No. 25 with an 8-1 record. Its only loss came at the hands of No. 2 Katy in Week 6, 35-30.
