2016 MaxPreps California Small Schools All-State Softball Team

MaxPreps is honored to name the best high school softball players from the 2016 season. This second installment honors players from medium schools. The California Small Schools All-State Team is generally composed of players who attend schools with enrollments of 1,000 or less.

Small Schools Player of the Year: Kristin Worley, Savanna (Anaheim), Senior

Worley finished her high school career with one of the best individual seasons in California history. She hit .769 (81 base hits), scored 73 runs and stole 67 bases for a 30-win team that reached the CIF-Southern Section finals.

In four varsity seasons, Worley set a state record for career hits with 281. Her hits, runs and stolen base numbers are all top-five individual marks in Southern Section history. She has signed with Chico State.

Small Schools Team of the Year: Paraclete (Lancaster)

Paraclete captured its second-straight CIF-SS D-6 title by going 28-0 and extending its winning streak to 48 over two years. The Spirits were led by all-CIFSS picks Taylor Roberts (Section Player of the Year), Kaila Searcy and Kaytlynn Johnson.

Paraclete had it all. Offensively, the Spirits averaged a dozen runs per game and allowed just 44 in 28 outings. They scored more than 10 runs in 21 of their games and 19 times they won by shutout.

In a dozen Gold Coast League games, they allowed just seven runs.

Small Schools Coach of the Year: Margaret Neill, Paraclete (Lancaster)

Neill guided Paraclete to its second-straight CIF-SS D-6 title as the Spirits extended their winning streak to 48 over two seasons. Neill has guided Paraclete to the section finals nine times.

Neill's final win of the season gave her 726 career wins, tying her with Notre Dame (Salinas) coach Joe Given for fourth on the state's all-time list. She trails San Pedro's Tony Dobra by just two victories.

In the last three seasons, Neill has led the Spirits to 81 wins and just six setbacks.

P - Karlee Coughlin, Sutter, Senior
Coughlin led the Huskies at the plate (41 RBIs, 8 homers, 51 runs, .451 batting average) and in the circle (21 wins, 1.65 ERA and 200 strikeouts). As a result, Sutter reached the Northern Section D-4 final. She has signed with Southern Oregon.

P - Ashley Daugherty, Templeton, Freshman
Daugherty won only 15 games (losing five), but had a 0.44 ERA and struck out 293 batters in 143 innings. Opponents batted .099 against her. She had 10 shutouts and struck out 10 or more in a game 20 times with a season-high 20 twice. She also batted .443 with 27 RBIs and 16 extra-base hits.

P - Hailey Dolcini, Fortuna, Junior
Though her stats were down a bit from her 2015 all-American season, Dolcini led Fortuna to a 21-win season with 273 strikeouts, 0.98 ERA and 21 wins in 164 innings. She also batted .452 with 23 RBIs and 35 runs scored. She has committed to UC Riverside.

P - Linnay Wilson, Coalinga, Junior
Wilson, who has committed to Loyola Marymount, led the Horned Toads to a 19-8 season as she won 18 games and batted .466 with eight homers and 38 RBIs. She also struck out 293 in just 159 innings to go along with a 1.23 ERA.

P - Kaytlin Donaldson, Waterford, Senior
Donaldson had 32 extra-base hits and slugged 1.209 in 26 games (51 hits, 36 RBIs, 19 doubles) and also struck out 277 in 153 innings for the youthful Wildcats. She will attend Southwestern Oklahoma.

P - Liliana Berber, Firebaugh, Senior
Berber posted a 1.69 ERA and won 19 of 21 starts as Firebaugh captured the Central Section D-5 title. She also batted .306.

P - Kelci Hill, Santa Rosa Academy (Menifee), Freshman
Named to the All-Valley South League Team, Hill won 18 times and struck out 276 in 141 innings. She also batted .700 with 56 hits (24 for extra bases) in 23 games. She had 18 multi-hit games. Hill had double digit strikeouts in all but one game.

P - Carli Lewis, Lassen (Susanville), Junior
Lewis won 20 games with a 1.05 ERA and 224 strikeouts in 147 innings as the Grizzlies won their final 16 games and the Northern Section D-4 title. She also batted .346.

P - Grace Garcia, Half Moon Bay, Sophomore
Garcia pitched the Cougars to the CIF-Central Coast Section D-4 title by winning 18 games (11 by shutout), posting a 0.90 ERA and striking out 156 in 123 innings. She allowed just six hits and struck out 21 in three postseason victories.

P - Emma Detamore, Louisville (Woodland Hills), Senior
The Portland State-bound Detamore led Louisville to its first CIF-SS final, earning Sunshine League MVP honors for the second-consecutive season. The All-CIFSS D-5 pick went 19-8 with a 1.22 ERA, recording 209 strikeouts and 28 walks in 161 innings. She also batted .416 with 29 RBIs.

P - Presley Miraglia, Burroughs, Sophomore
Miraglia, the Pacific League MVP and an all-CIFSS D-3 selection, led Burroughs to its first CIFSS semifinal, posting a 20-4 record with a 1.50 ERA. She recorded 183 strikeouts and 20 walks in 158 innings as Burroughs was unbeaten in league play.

P - Taylor Galyean, West Valley (Cottonwood), Sophomore
Galyean, the Northern Athletic League MVP, was second in the Northern Section in strikeouts (232), third in wins (21) and eighth in ERA (1.33) as West Valley won 23 games and went deep into the playoffs.

P - Carly Slack, Marin Catholic (Kentfield), Junior
Named the The Marin Independent Journal's POY, Slack led Marin Catholic to a 22-4 season and its second-straight CIF-North Coast Section D-4 title. Slack won 19 games (19-3) for the second-consecutive season and recorded 206 strikeouts in 145 innings. In three seasons at Marin Catholic, she has a career record of 54-7 (.885 winning percentage).

C - Jaydee Boursaw, St. Patrick-St. Vincent (Vallejo), Senior
Boursaw batted .593 with 13 home runs, 33 runs, 51 hits and 51 RBIs. She has signed with Yavapai Junior College.

C - Jordyn Turner, Cloverdale, Senior
Turner batted .411 with 24 RBIs and scored 30 times as Cloverdale reached the CIF-NCS D-5 final before losing, 1-0. Turner had a .990 fielding percentage.

C - Brielle Stephens, Durham, Junior
Stephens combined to drive in or score 78 runs in 25 games to lead the Trojans to a 18-8 season. The College of Idaho commit batted .583, had an on-base percentage of .657 and slugged .986.

IF - Alina Leyva, Firebaugh, Senior
Start with 50 stolen bases and add a .431 batting average, 24 runs, 43 base hits and no errors and you end up all-state. That's what Leyva did as Firebaugh won its final eight games and the Central Section D-5 championship.

IF - Sarah Layman, Big Valley Christian (Modesto), Senior
Layman pitched (15-3, 2.21 ERA, 148 strikeouts in 110 innings) and hit (.537 average, 24 RBIs, 36 hits) the Lions to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D-6 title.

IF - Leah Lafata, Mariposa County (Mariposa), Junior
Lafata batted a team-high .448 with 39 base hits and stole 16 bases for the CIF-SJS D-6 title winners. She was also 15-0 with a 1.03 ERA and struck out 114 in 88 innings.

IF - Silent Rain Espinoza, Christian (El Cajon), Sophomore
Espinoza batted .562 with an on-base percentage of .632. She had 15 stolen bases, scored 37 runs and had 45 hits.

IF - Haley Brogard, East Nicolaus (Nicolaus), Senior
Brogard led East Nic to the Northern Section D-4 title and was named first team all-Northern Section. She batted .515 with 29 extra-base hits and drove in 46 teammates. She was also a standout pitcher with a 14-4 record and a 1.01 ERA.

IF - Kaila Searcy, Paraclete (Lancaster), Senior
Searcy had 11 homers, 53 RBIs and a .625 batting average to lead the Spirits to a 28-0 record and their second-straight CIF-SS D-6 title. Searcy's 58 career homers rank No. 2 on the all-time state list behind Tannon Snow (Chino Hills), who totaled 60. Searcy has signed with Central Arkansas.

IF - Kaitlin Okimoto, Burroughs (Burbank), Senior
The Brown signee batted .429 with eight homers, 30 RBIs, 36 runs scored, 11 doubles and four triples and committed just three errors at shortstop. Okimoto was a first-team all-Pacific League selection and an all-CIFSS D-3 pick who helped league champion Burroughs make it to the semifinals.

IF - Bradi Kooyman, Elliot Christian (Lodi), Senior
Though her .662 batting average was the lowest of her four varsity seasons, Kooyman scored 44 and drove in 51 in just 23 games. Her on-base, slugging and OPS percentages were as good as ever – .736, 1.264 and 2.001, respectively. She has signed with Missouri. IF - Tyesen Gordon, St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda), Sophomore
Gordon led the Pilots to the CIF-NCS D-5 title when she batted .583 with 36 RBIs in 19 games. She scored 36 times, had 16 extra-base hits, slugged 1.100 and had an on-base percentage of .671.

OF - Zia Norris, Rolling Hills Prep (San Pedro), Junior
Norris led Rolling Hills Prep to the CIF-SS D-6 title, collecting eight hits in 15 at-bats to drive in 10 runs in the final three games of the season. She finished with 11 homers, 41 RBIs and a .596 batting average. She has committed to UCLA.

OF - Julia Rabbitt, Marin Catholic (Kentfield), Senior
Leading Marin Catholic to the CIF-NCS D-4 title, Rabbit batted .529, scored 42 runs and drove in 26. She committed just one error and went 3-1 with a 1.21 ERA in the circle.

OF - Valerie Lopez, Orange Cove, Senior
Lopez stole 48 bases and scored 40 runs as Orange Cove won the CIF-CS D-6 title and won its final 13 games. She batted .486.

OF - Grace Hosman, Millennium (Tracy), Freshman
Hosman led the Falcons to a 26-2 season and a deep playoff run when she hit .649, scoring 65 times and driving in 25. She also had 40 stolen bases.

UTIL - Janell Brown, View Park (Los Angeles), Freshman
Brown led View Park to the CIF-Los Angeles City Section D-4 title and 17 straight wins to end season with a .660 batting average, 28 runs, 31 RBIs and 31 stolen bases to go with a 10-1 pitching record and a 1.52 ERA. In just 92 innings, she struck out 226 batters, an average of 2.5 per inning. In her final seven games, she had 21 base hits and 21 RBIs and struck out 98 batters in 42 innings.

UTIL - Taylor Roberts, Paraclete (Lancaster), Senior
The CIF Southern Section D-6 Player of the Year ended her season with a tie-breaking three-run homer in the seventh inning to win the CIF title game against Savanna. The Adams State recruit hit .532 with nine homers, 37 RBIs, 11 doubles and also had 98 strikeouts and seven walks.

UTIL - Noemi Farfan, Calvary Christian Academy (Chula Vista), Sophomore
You want numbers? Farfan has them: 100 RBIs, .747 average, 43 runs, 59 hits, 44 extra-base hits (16 doubles, 16 triples, 12 homers) and 38 stolen bases. She also pitched: 18-4 record with a 2.65 ERA and 259 strikeouts in 126 innings.

UTIL - Chloe Romero, Academy of Careers & Exploration (Helendale), Junior
Romero picked up where she left off last season, winning 17 of 21 games and striking out 237 in 129 innings with a 0.92 ERA. She also batted .645 with 49 hits in 22 games.

UTIL - Sydney Kuma, Caruthers, Freshman
There was nothing freshman-like about Kuma, as she batted .622 and drove in 40 runs with 26 extra-base hits. In 28 games, she had 51 hits and scored 42 times. She also had 17 walks to give her a .673 on-base percentage. She was equally outstanding in the circle with a 20-4 record and 260 strikeouts in 164 innings. Caruthers reached the CIF-CS D-5 final.
