Video: NBA Draft winners and losers
Chris Stonebraker, Zack Poff and Jason Hickman weigh in on who got better on draft night.A numbers-based review of Thursday night's NBA Draft in Brooklyn:
60Number of picks former MaxPreps All-Americans
Cliff Alexander and
Aaron Harrison saw come off the board without hearing their names called. Alexander, a beastly 6-foot-9 power forward, was a leading candidate for National Player of the Year honors as a senior at
Curie (Chicago). Since then, his high school team fell apart amidst an eligibility scandal, he was sidelined for much of his freshman year at Kansas by the NCAA and has now gone undrafted. Similarly, Harrison was considered a top-of-the-class talent in high school, had his moments at Kentucky, yet also experienced draft night disappointment.
22 Draftees that graduated from public high schools.
18Alumni of Nike's EYBL drafted in the first round.
11Losses for
Stanley Johnson since his freshman year at
Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.). Detroit — the team that took him off the board with the No. 8 pick — lost that many games by Nov. 17 of the 2014-15 season.
7Players drafted that spent time at high schools in Texas. The run on Lone Star State talent began with No. 7
Emmanuel Mudiay of
Prime Prep and continued with No. 10 overall
Justise Winslow (
St. John's), No. 11
Myles Turner (
Euless Trinity), No. 15
Kelly Oubre (
Fort Bend Bush), No. 33
Jordan Mickey (Prime Prep), No. 43
Joseph Young (
Houston Yates) and No. 44
Andrew Harrison (
Fort Bend Travis).
6 Players drafted from USA Basketball's 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship gold medal team.
Jabari Parker went to Milwaukee in last year's draft while
Dakari Johnson, Stanley Johnson,
Tyus Jones,
Jahlil Okafor and Winslow were selected Thursday night. At least two others from that 12-man roster could go in future drafts.
2Players from the 2013-14
Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) team drafted in the first round. Atlanta took Oubre — who left Texas for the Pilots as a senior — with the No. 15 pick and
Rashad Vaughn went two spots later to Milwaukee. Surprisingly, that wasn't one of Findlay Prep's better campaigns with a record of 31-5 and final national ranking of No. 13.
2 Draft picks from national powerhouse
Montverde Academy (Fla.).
D'Angelo Russell went No. 2 to the Lakers while aforementioned Dakari Johnson went with No. 48 to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Montverde Academy could potentially have the No. 1 overall pick in 2016 with recent graduate
Ben Simmons.
0Players drafted under 6-feet tall.
