Catholic-B.R. (Baton Rouge) debuts at No. 1 in the state's preseason MaxPreps Top 25.
The Bears notched a 14-10 win over
Jesuit (New Orleans) in the Division I state championship game last season. After jumping out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter, they were able to hold onto the victory with a game-ending, 16-play drive that went for 67 yards and took up more than nine minutes.

Shelton Sampson Jr., the No. 6 overall wide receiver prospect in the nation and No. 42 overall prospect in the Class of 2023 according to 247Sports Composite rankings, returns to lead a talented roster for the top-ranked team in the preseason rankings.
Coming in at No. 2 is
Zachary, which went 15-0 and defeated
Ponchatoula 28-20 in the Class 5A state title game last season. The Broncos again will be led by the No. 8 quarterback prospect in the Class of 2023, Alabama pledge
Eli Holstein, who completed 203 of 312 pass attempts for 3,264 yards and 43 total touchdowns with six interceptions last season.
Along with the top two teams in the preseason rankings,
Newman (New Orleans) is another team to keep an eye on as the Greenies are headlined by the top prospect in the Class of 2023,
Arch Manning. The Texas commit has thrown for 6,307 yards and 81 touchdowns during his career. He needs 901 yards during his senior season to break his uncle Peyton Manning's school record of 7,207 yards.
