Video: Broken play leads to game-winnerHenryetta (Okla.) receiver Brannon Murphy makes incredible pass to Steven Slade as time expires. It's been said by coaches in all sports: Players make plays.
With his team trailing
Chandler (Okla.), 30-26, with time for one final play,
Henryetta (Okla.) head coach Darin Johnson dug deep into his bag of tricks.
Quarterback
Jarrett Day took the snap and handed the ball off to running back
Avery Moore, who then flipped it to junior receiver
Brannon Murphy. The razzle-dazzle went off without a hitch, although there was one problem — nobody was open downfield.
But players make plays.
Quarterbacks are accustomed to scrambling, buying time to give their receivers time to get open. But Murphy is not a quarterback.
Instinct took over as he sprinted toward the near sideline. Nope. Still nobody open.
He reversed field, picked up a huge block from
Brice Sanford, and decided to take his shot. Murphy flung the ball 35 yards into the end zone, in the general vicinity of two streaking Henryetta receivers — and four Chandler defenders.
Somehow the ball fell into the arms of senior
Steven Slade, who corralled the catch with no time left on the clock to give Henryetta the miraculous victory.
Predictable madness ensued as the Knights improved to 2-2 on the season.
