No. 10 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood) hosts No. 13 American Heritage (Plantation) in one of the biggest high school football games of the year. The Lions are 3-0 and all three wins have come against teams included in our expanded
top 100. Mike Smith has led the Patriots to a 4-0 start in his first season as head coach and faces his biggest test on Friday.
The Trinity League vs. USA Showcase is this weekend and both games are included in our MaxPreps Top 10 Games of the Week.
No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) welcomes Hawaii's top-ranked team Kahuku on Saturday and No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) looks to extend its win streak to 22 against Mililani (Hawaii) on Friday. Both games are at St. John Bosco High School.
Caleb Downs and Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) were one of two new teams to join the
MaxPreps Top 25 this week and the Hawks have a huge matchup against the defending AAA state champs, Cedar Grove (Ellenwood). The Saints are looking to knock off their third consecutive AAAAAAA opponent on Friday.
No. 3 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) continues its road tour to begin the 2022 season with a matchup in Florida against the defending 8A state champs, Venice. The Panthers won in Ohio against East St. Louis (Ill.) in their season opener and followed that up with a 47-7 win in Texas against DeSoto. The Baltimore power won't have its first home game until Oct. 7.
Teams from California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia are all included in this week's action.

Top players
Chaminade-Madonna made a statement last week beating Northwestern (Miami) 42-14 at Traz Powell Stadium and another big win this week would move them farther up the rankings. The Patriots are winning by an average margin of 32.7 points per game and were the only team to beat the Lions in 2021. American Heritage has won the last nine meetings and the last time the Lions beat the Patriots was in 2006.

The top-ranked Braves have opened the 2022 season putting a running clock on all three opponents. The Red Raiders are riding a 14-game winning streak and face their first out-of-state opponent since 2019. St. John Bosco faces Kahuku, Central Catholic (Modesto) and Servite (Anaheim) before a huge showdown against No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) on Oct. 7.

The biggest game in Georgia this week features some of the best talent in the Peach State. Downs, a 2023 Alabama commit, is the top-rated safety and No. 1 player in Georgia. He makes a huge impact on defense, offense and special teams. The Saints are coming off consecutive wins against AAAAAAA opponents. They beat Westlake (Atlanta) 30-20 and followed that with a 40-6 win over the defending state champs, Collins Hill (Suwanee).

After the Panthers opened their season with a 20-13 win over East St. Louis (Ill.) the Baltimore power made a statement the following week with a one-sided 47-7 victory against DeSoto (Texas). Venice bounced back with a 12-11 win over Naples after a 32-26 loss against Northwestern (Miami). Both teams were idle last week.
Thursday, 7 p.m. at Veterans Stadium (Long Beach)

The first of two Calfornia intrastate games features some of the best talent in the Golden State. Nelson and Lemon are as good as any duo in the country. Lemon has already posted two games this season with over 200-plus yards receiving. The Eagles are off to a hot start and look to add another quality win before Trinity League action begins. These two played for the first time since 2010 last season and Santa Margarita won 42-21.

The defending Division 1 state champions have started this season with four quality wins. All four opponents are undefeated against teams not named St. Edward. The Tigers have won three in a row since a 49-31 season-opening loss against Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati), a team that jumped in the MaxPreps Top 25 rankings this week. This will be the third straight year these two Ohio powers meet and the Eagles have won the last two.

This one features two of the best teams in Northern California . The Pirates have started the 2022 season outscoring their first three opponents 123-16 but face a big step up in competition on Friday. Rashada is coming off his best game of the season completing 21 of 30 passes for 360 yards and four touchdowns. Folsom bounced back with a 65-0 win over Edison (Stockton) after a 17-12 loss against Serra (San Mateo). These two played last season and the Bulldogs cruised to a 38-17 win.

Another big-time matchup in Ohio features two 3-0 teams. This is the best start for St. Ignatius since 2017 and legendary head coach Chuck Kyle is trying to lead the Wildcats to their 12th state title in his last season as head coach. He took over as head coach in 1983 and has led the Cleveland power to 372 wins. The Division II state runner-up has outscored its first three opponents 139-41. The Knights have won five state titles since 2015.

Mililani's only loss came against another Southern California opponent, Mission Viejo. The Trojans started the season off with a 28-7 win over St. Louis (Honolulu) and will try and pull off one of the biggest upsets over the last decade on Saturday against the second-ranked Monarchs. Brown has started his career winning his first 21 starts and seven have come against MaxPreps Top 25 opponents. Mater Dei is idle next week then begins Trinity League action on Sept. 30 at JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano).

The fourth out-of-state matchup features the top-ranked team in West Virginia against the second-ranked squad in Virginia. The Springers got a huge 26-20 win against Chambers (Charlotte) to begin the season and have won their last two games outscoring the opposition 111-7. The Bulldogs have outscored their first three opponents 158-47. These two played last year and Martinsburg pulled out a 26-25 win. They have combined for 13 state titles since 2010.
